Lifeguard Chair And Selecting The Perfect One For Your Facility

February 7, 2012 · Filed Under Outdoors · Comment

Are all lifeguard chairs the same? I think not. You want a chair that will last long. That will be comfortable to the lifeguard to make for an alert lifeguard. You want a chair that is also cost effective, not going to rip your wallet.

Lets look at some basic knowledge when selecting a good quality lifeguard chair, and one that suites your facility. These are some helpful hints when picking a lifeguard chair:

(1) Less crowed swimming area, pick a smaller chair. From the ground to the seat, about 30 to 40 inches
(2) Busy swimming area, pick a taller chair. From the ground to the seat, about 60 to 70 inches
(3) Comfortable lifeguard chair. So the lifeguard stays awake and alert while on duty
(4) You need a chair that lasts. That will last the elements and the weather, and the chlorine or ocean waters.
(5) Lifeguard chair should come with an umbrella holder.
(6) Chairs should come with a hook so the ring buoy or accessories can be place there and already within reach and ready to be used.
(7) When the lifeguard stands on his or chair, the step should be a no slip step.

Now lets look more into the size of the chair. When is a small lifeguard chair needed? A smaller lifeguard chair is needed if the pool area is small. And the lifeguard does not need to look over anyone while watching the water. Usually small chairs go in apartment complex swimming pools of 10 or less people. Meaning 10 or less people are swimming at one time. A smaller lifeguard chair is 30 inches from the ground to the seat of the chair.

When is a bigger lifeguard chair needed? For a bigger swimming pool or beach front properties, you want the tall towers. Over 60 inches off the ground is fine. That is 60 inches from the ground to the seat of the lifeguard chair. Reason for the tall chair is so when the lifeguards are sitting in one, the lifeguard can view over the people walking by and see the patrons in the water. This allows the lifeguard to easily scan the water for any one that may need assistance.

Another benefit for a tall chair in a busy place is the lifeguard can view deeper into the water being higher up. Just in case anyone under the water may need assistance. This is really important too. Because I was a lifeguard for 7 years and one time I saw someone at the bottom of the pool that needed help. I then rushed in and saved that person.

One last reason that tall lifeguard towers is important, is because if anyone needs to find the lifeguard in an emergency, all the person has to do is look up. And see the chair. And the person sitting in it. Now, stander bys can quickly know who to go to, and they can quickly inform the lifeguard of the emergency. And the last reason a tall lifeguard chair is beneficial in a busy place is because it establishes authority. It enforces the concept of the lifeguard being in charge of the entire pool. Even the deck. So as soon as the patrons walk through the gate in the pool area, that is the lifeguards domain. He or she has authority on the beach side. And everyone knows it with the tall lifeguard chair.

Last Minute Winter Outdoor Camping Tips

February 2, 2012 · Filed Under Camping · Comment

Even if winter is almost over, it isn’t over yet. You can still have your last minute winter outdoor camping before the snow genuinely melts.

In some areas, January and February are the coldest months of the year. However, it may also be the months when the snow starts to melt in some.

You need to be a bit more wary with the activities you do on your outdoor camping trips. You should also get some really accurate information about the locations where you want to have your camp out. Some places near mountains might not be safe enough for outdoor campings because snow is melting.

The last thing you would want is to get included in a landslide. An avalanche is very deadly especially during the time when everything starts to warm up.

Snow formed in cliffs and slopes don’t really melt slowly. That is because warm air easily passes through these parts so the ice melts rapidly.

You might also want to keep away from frozen lakes when the temperature is starting to rise. Chances are, the ice could easily break and you could end up under the freezing water.

Falling under a melting ice patch can also be very dangerous in frozen rivers. Since it is a river, it will surely have a strong current under the ice patch.

If you are not watchful, you could get taken by the strong current underneath the ice patch. It would be safer to set up your tents and campsite somewhere safer. Setting up your winter camp out in the woods would be so much safer than anywhere else.

You can use the trees to hold up your tents for you if. Of course, you will surely need a wooden stake to keep your tent on the ground.

Strong winds might suddenly blow your way so it would be better to make sure your tent stays on the ground. You should also make sure that you make your bonfire within a stationary area.

Don’t just make bonfires each time in different spots. If you can, it would be smart to take a barbecue grill with you. Make sure that it is strong enough for pots and pans.

That way, you would not have to start a bonfire on the ground. It would also be a bit more difficult to start a fire on the ground since there’s snow.

For sure, the ground will be all wet which could wreck your food. Speaking of food, it would be more convenient if you would just bring food that can be eaten easily.

Hotdogs will surely do but you don’t have to eat it for every meal. You may bring processed goods that you can easily cook in a pan on top of your barbecue grill.

You should also bring lots of water with you since there won’t be any potable water around. It’s winter so everything is supposed to be frozen. The streams where you used to get water are all frozen.

Lastly, don’t forget to dress the part. Make sure you bring enough clothes to keep you warm during the day and warmer during the night.

How Lifeguard Whistles Saves Lives

January 18, 2012 · Filed Under Outdoors · Comment

A good lifeguard whistle is needed for those fast, split second emergency communication situations. Lifeguard whistles can literally save a life or prevent serous injury.

If there is one thing a lifeguard carries with him, its a whistle. Sure the lifeguard carries other lifesaving devices with him, but always a whistle is strapped on to a lifeguard. Why?

In an emergency situation, it is vital for the lifeguard to get the attention of one patron, multiple patrons, or the entire swimming area.

It is one of the most, if not the most, effective and practical tools to get the attention of the person or persons you want.

One benefit of a whistle is that it stops a patron from possibly harming himself or the people around him. Hearing of a whistle quickly stops the person from doing whatever he or she is doing. The patron my be doing a dangerous act that may result in injury and even death to himself or the people around him. Hearing a loud sound of a whistle can quickly stop this dangerous act. Since other people may be listening to this, this also sets the tone for others to comply. This lets everyone know that the lifeguard means to enforce this that particular rule and is very likely to enforce all other rules as well. One whistle blow can help set the tone for a safe swimming area.

A whistle can also get the attention of multiple people. If multiple people are doing something dangerous, then a whistle can also quickly stop that act.

Also, a whistle can get the attention of an entire swimming area. In case there is thunder or other emergencies that patrons need to evacuate the pool very fast, the whistle can get the attention of everyone in the pool area. So all at once, the lifeguard now has the attention of everyone. And everyone then is quiet and still, awaiting for the lifeguard to give the next instructions. The necessary instructions are then given to the patrons. In an emergency situation, proper communication is vital to keep everyone safe, making the whistle a very effective communication tool.

Beach and large swimming pool lifeguards also use whistles to communicate with each other. At times lifeguards need to communicate with each other. And at times the distance between them can be far, such as the distance of a beach or the distance of a large swimming pool. So lifeguards sometimes use whistles to communicate with each other. One whistle blow can mean something. Two whistle blows immediately back to back can mean something else. And so one. This code is used and is an effective use of communication.

How loud should the whistle be? The answer: loud and crisp. You want the whistle to be heard over the water and heard through and over a crowd. A whistle that is loud and crisp gets the attention of one patron or an entire area super fast. This is vital in an emergency situation.

Where must a whistle be? A lifeguard whistle is usually accompanied by a strap. The strap is either on the lifeguards wrist or around the lifeguards neck. Both are suitable. More often than not, the whistle is around the lifeguards neck.

The reason why its positioned so close to the lifeguard, is because it has to be readily accessible in an emergency. And it is used very often. It is the most widely used and most effect tool the lifeguard has.

Maintaining Your Winter Picnic Warm And Comfy

December 21, 2011 · Filed Under Outdoors · Comment

Even if it the air is getting colder as we approach the Christmas season, picnics are still the trendiest things going on. In fact, most picnic goers seem like they are enjoying the cold season for outdoor picnics. Of course, this is the time of the year when they get to relax a lot more.

Winter is the next commercialized season after summer. Typically, people love going on picnics during the summer. However, bringing hot coffee or hot chocolate drinks during a winter picnic is the best. It feels really good drinking hot coffee or hot chocolate to thaw our freezing bodies.

It is also the best season to have those outdoor barbecues. Just make sure that there is not snow falling and you are all set. Having a winter outdoor picnic at your backyard is a very good idea.

It helps families and friends to bond even more. It is also a great time to share those personal moments with the people closest to you.

During an outdoor winter picnic, you would still need a nice picnic basket for your food. No matter what sort of food you bring, it would still look and feel good to bring it in a picnic basket. There are lots of available thermal picnic baskets that you buy online.

Also, you can keep your food fresh in most insulated picnic baskets. Of course, you need to dress the part to make your winter picnic a success. Make sure you tell everyone to dress up for the winter picnic that you will be having.

Also, don’t forget to tell them to bring some hot food for the picnic. That way, you would not have to settle for cold food in a cold weather.

For starters, you might want to bring a huge thermos of hot chocolate and a bunch of chocolate chip cookies. To add a little spice to your hot chocolate, you may add some marshmallows in it. Since you will be taking out your cookies in such a cold weather, do not forget to put it in a waterproof container. As much as possible, put it in an airtight container to keep it fresh.

In some cases, you might also need to bring some sunblock lotion for your face. It does not mean that the sun won’t be shining even if there is snow around. You would still need to protect your skin against the harmful UV rays from the sun.

You do not have to soak your face with sunblock lotion. A thin layer should do as long as you apply it properly. Remember, sunburn during winter happens so it would be so much better to be safe than sorry.

Finally, it would be best if you can get a weather forecast before you get on with your outdoor winter picnic. A little snow would probably be okay as long as you keep yourself well-dressed. If the weather forecast says that snow will fall a bit heavier than expected, I suggest you delay your picnic. It would be better to play it safe than risk it.

To Make The Magic Materialize On Your Winter Picnic

December 21, 2011 · Filed Under Outdoors · Comment

Although we are already accustomed to having picnics in the city, it would still be better to go out of town. That way, you will be able to appreciate the wonders of nature even more. Going on a fun family picnic is no exception to the rule. It would really be such a fun experience for you and your friends to go on a picnic out of town.

Even if it is winter, you do not have to let it get in the way. By all means, go on a picnic and plan it just like how you would on a summer day. A winter picnic is just the same in principle as a summer picnic. The only difference would be the setting and the clothes you will be wearing.

Of course, you cannot wear slippers or a plain shirt out in the freezing cold. You would need some thick clothes to keep you warm as you enjoy your outdoor winter picnic.

Also, never forget to bring food that will stay hot until you have to eat it. You may bring food in special picnic baskets that will keep your food fresh and warm.

You may also have an outdoor barbecue picnic with your family and friends. Just ensure that you use proper equipment to avoid any accidents. The last thing you would want is an accident during a picnic. That would definitely take the fun out.

If you are not able to leave town for your picnic, try going to grander parks instead. That way, you will still be able to get a feel of that wide field. Unlike summer picnics, winter picnics require different type of food. If you are used to having watermelons, sandwiches and cupcakes during summer, it will be a bit different this time.

You might want to bring something that will keep your tummy warm. At the same time, make sure you bring foods that do not require too much effort to pack. Preparation time for picnic food matters a lot during winter picnics. You would want to have food that you can quickly eat before it gets exposed too long in the cold weather.

Perhaps you would want to bring a huge thermos of hot chocolate for everyone. I am pretty sure that it will be the star of your winter picnic if you do. Also, do not forget to bring some marshmallows for it.

If you want to bring in sandwiches and stuff, make sure you pack them in aluminum foils. That way, you can warm it easily by your camp fire if you want it a bit warmer.

Although it is unnecessary, heating your food by the camp fire is a really fun experience especially for the kids. Just make sure that they keep a safe distance from the fire. Finger foods will always be the star of any picnic. Make sure you bring enough for everyone to enjoy.

Better yet, tell everyone who will be coming along to bring diverse food for everyone. That way, you would not have to shoulder all the food for everyone. It would really be more enjoyable if everyone gets to share not just the food but the obligations as well.
