Search engines are something of an enigma. You type in a keyword or two, click search and up pop some results. A quick scan of the top 10 leaves you shaking your head, wondering if you and Google are speaking the same language, as you find that your innocent search for fairy wings brought in results ranging from how to make wings to a story about some Goth chick, who likes to wear black leather wings when she goes to the grocery store. Searching through the results to find just what you are looking for can give a person a headache! The truth is, a lot of those people may not have even wanted their page to be found when you searched for fairy wings but it wasn’t up to them. It was up to the search engine. Likewise, there were probably people that did want to come up who didn’t. This is why so many businesses are focused on building a search engine friendly website. They want you to wind up at their site when you search for their products and this is the only way to make it happen!

Building a search engine friendly website has almost nothing to do with how your site will look. Color schemes, resolutions and logos mean absolutely nothing to a search engine. Search engines are all about relevancy. When you enter a search term, the search engine will scour the internet for sites that are relevant to what you are searching for. They will look for sites that have a name that matches the keyword somehow. They will look for content that contains the keywords and they will look for how many times a site is linked to for that keyword. The engine then takes all of that information and weighs it somehow, ending with the list of results that it delivers to your screen. The rub is, nobody is 100% sure what will count the most and which things will help move their site to the top of the list most quickly.

If you are building a website, that you want people to find then you will need to take a couple of steps to give yourself the best chance at being found. The name of your site is a really important first step. If your name is Michael, and your site is going to be about widgets, then you will do better to name your site “www.widgets.com” than you would be to name it “www.michaelssite.com”. Unless of course you want to play host to a horde of visitors that were looking for Michael, in which case, go for it.

Building a search engine friendly website means building your site to be very clearly about whatever it is about. Michael’s widget site should have content that talks about widgets. It should talk about what sizes widgets come in, what the most popular widgets are and what kind of wine you should serve with widgets at a dinner party. The goal is to make sure that the words that you think people who are looking for a site like yours are featured prominently on your site, without just repeating the same word again and again and again.

You may think that you are building your website to be attractive and fun for your visitors, but if you want to have visitors in the first place, it is actually more important that you focus on building a search engine friendly website. Once you have that, the rest is all icing.

Are you ready to get started? Now is the best time to take action and get started today!

Google Analytics is such a powerful tool to use – it actually allows you to decide what you want to measure on your website. You can literally put this tool to work for you and personalize it as well.

Google Analytics allows you to identify you ideal objective, goals and specifics. If all you want to know is who visited your website and how they got there – that is simple enough, you can do that. However, the power of Google Analytics lies in the ability to define goals and put on filters that will allow you to do in-depth analysis of your website.

What does this mean? Let’s break it down for you so you understand how Google Analytics works to your advantage. First of all, Google works with objectives, goals, and specifics these allow you to really hone in on what you are trying to accomplish when managing your website.

Objectives: An objective is the big picture – what do you want your website to do? What is the purpose for your website – what do you want visitors to do once they are there?

If you are an e-commerce site maybe you want to sell an item and make lots of money. On the other hand, you may want to know what products are selling and what products you should take off your catalogue.

This would be an objective.

Goals: If objectives are the result you ultimately want to achieve with your website,a goal is a short term aim. What has to happen for you to hit your objective. Do you have to track visitors that enter on a certain web page? Or perhaps your goal is to sell 30% more widgets within 6 months.

You can do this using Google Analytics as the tool and setting goals within the application.

Specifics: Now that you have outlined your objectives and goals you are ready to use Analytics to your advantage. Specifics are the “how” the action steps you will take to reach what you really want.

Example: You would set up the sales page and a funnel (using google analytics) to measure how traffic is coming into your website. Google can tell you where they are entering as well as where your visitors are exiting your website. Knowing how your visitors are responding to your website allows you to go to these pages and tweak them – this help you achieve the results you want.

Google has made it easy to place code in your web pages, they do the initial metrics for you and best of all it is free.

If you are not particularly savvy about how your website is put together or developed – leave it up to your website professional to add the code to your individual web pages. Once the code is embedded analytics will start collecting data and within a few days you will see countless stats related to your site.

Once you become familiar with the dashboard that Google Analytic’s provides, you will be able to set up the goals and specifics of your website. You will access all the data through the Internet, you can login and set the parameter right then and there.

Another great function of Google Analytics is that you can set up different profiles for one website. You can break down your website into different sections called “profiles” and monitor them independently, this allows you to see which sections of your website are effective and which need work.

AdWords and Analytics

Google AdWords is a pay-per-click advertising program. Essentially you would buy keywords and then pay a small amount for every time a potential client (website visitor) clicks on an ad you put up through Google.

If you are thinking about using AdWords as part of your marketing campaign or are using them already, Google works seamlessly in providing you with the answers to all important questions like, is this add working or am I making more money on these ads then I am spending? You will be able to monitor visitors who click on the ads and buy and those who just leave your site before every going to the sales page.

When you sign up for Google AdWords use the same account number as you did with analytics (Google uses your gmail accounts login and password). You will then be able to link both accounts together. AdWords will be imported into your Google Analytics account. This helps provide you with a safety net so you can watch the behavior of your visitors and change what isn’t working.

The development team at Google has a way of making their tools very usable and Google Analytics is just one of many tools that lives up to Googles high standards.

The World Wide Web offers a plethora of information on everything under the sun. With billions of sites at your disposal, searching for the information you need can be daunting, especially for the uninitiated. For those who have no clue where to begin, the best search engines available on the web is a good place to start.

For general information services, Google is the web search engine mostly used by web denizens. It offers language translation services as well as different options to customize your search. Google has a PageRank system, which utilizes algorithm in determining which websites appear on top of the list of search results. This system prevents sites that use spamming from appearing at the top of the page. Aside form websites, Google also includes other file types like Word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, and plain text files in their results.

Yahoo! Search is another popular search engine, and is ranked 2nd query volume. Yahoo! utilizes SearchScan, which alerted users of websites with possible viruses, spam and spyware. Yahoo! started out as a directory to various websites before it became a search engine during the 1990s. Using all the search engine companies it acquired, Yahoo! created its own search engine using the web crawler system, which browses the web for results matching the user’s query. Starting 2009, Yahoo! Search is powered by its competitor Bing, which is owned by Microsoft.

Ask.com, formerly known as Ask Jeeves, started out as a website where people received answers for questions they posted, combined with basic keyword searching. In 2006, it became a full-blown search engine, and the character Jeeves was phased out. Ask.com has a “Binoculars Site Preview” function which allows users to glimpse a sneak peak of a website by placing the cursor over the result to get a pop-up screenshot. Ask.com also has an installable toolbar, where users can search for sites direct from their internet browser toolbar.

Bing is a search engine developed by Microsoft using the web-crawler system. Search results are broken down into sections, where each result includes a sub-link, which shows other links located within the site itself. It also features a navigation pane, where users can track previous and related searches, and glimpse a preview of each site in the search result, as well as links inside the site. The site also has a video thumbnail preview feature, where users can mouse-over video results to play the video. Bing also caters to specific searches like sports, finance, and even mathematical information. If asked, Bing can display scores from games, complete with team and player statistics. It can also display stock quotes when users key in a company’s stock symbol, as well as generate mathematical computations when users type in mathematical equations on the search box.

Though there many search engines throughout the web, Google, Yahoo!, Ask.com and Bing are your best bets at finding exactly what you’re searching for, with their extensive archives, plus a myriad of advanced features, they make internet surfing safer and simpler, to make sure you don’t get lost amid the confusing roads and byways of the world wide web.

Visit these sites if you want more information about best search engines or search engine sitemaps in particular.

The power of the internet is immerse. According to google there were over 180 million domain names in 2008. The opportunities are there for the taking. The secret is how to be found by your unknown market. Your unknown market being people that need to buy goods or services but do not yet know you.

Firstly question what your objective is for having a website. Is it a 24 hour a day shop window designed to increase turnover. Is it an information giving website that will free up your own resources?

I mean by this phone calls, postage costs, and all associated costs with delivering company information to clients.

Maybe your objective is to offer premium support to your exisiting customers. Whatever your main objective is, it can form the begninning of an effective and rewarding web marketing plan.

Do you know that internet users are split three way into sectors when they are using the internet to source products or services? The one we focus on is those why are ready to buy.

If you are using your website to find new customers, or the unknown market as its known in the advertising world then its crucial to target those searchers who are ready to buy. Sure those browsing can increase visitor numbers but the key to success is finding new paying customers.

Websites can be created that look mindblowingly terrificvery but what is often overlooked is that the internal framework, coding, and general foundations are not designed to ensure that the site can be found in the natural search results. Sites that perform to the max are crafted with special and specific attention to internal detail.

Templated websites can be nasty, inflexible and sometimes impossible to optimise and as a result you make an investment that can never give you a return.

You would not believe the number of firms out there who have am amazing looking website launched but no analytics. Analytics will allow you to see important data. For example how many visitors you had and when, how long visitors stay on the site for, keywords and route taken to get to your site and top level growth data.

Find a company that produce websites which are produced in such a way that specific Meta Tag and other code can be very specifically populated to be picked up by search engines.

Before you ask a design company to start work, its worthhile to think about the following. Pages to be included in the website. Number of pages. Images of your own which you will require integrating into the site. Textual content. Any transactional requirements. DO you want a blog, news page, enquiry forms. Will you run a newsletter than people can sign up to. Will you require a login service so that customers can log into a secure area of the site.

Any reputable web design company will guide you through this as part of the design process, but its productive and sometimes less costly to have input from the start.

Let’s solve the SEO mystery. There are a few things one must take into consideration when talking about search engines. One must know how they work and why they work the way they do. Search engines work by collecting different types of data from data mining files such as .html, .php, .asp, .aspx, .pdf. and/or a long list of other files which we will discuss later.

The search engines then store a cached version (in part or in whole) on their servers. When a query is typed in a search engine browser portal (like Google, Yahoo, Live/MSN, Dogpile, etc) results are then displayed based upon a search engine’s proprietary search algorithm.

This algorithm is derived from information gathered on the Internet or World Wide Web by either a computer and/or a person. An algorithm is basically a set of finite rules for calculating and data processing the subject and object query. Through collective knowledge and experience we can solve the mystery about search engine optimization. Now that we know how and why they work, let’s examine how can they work optimally for you.

So, how do I optimize my website? First you need a good domain name that is pertinent to your business, or know the key search words that a potential client will utilize to inquire about your business. Several tools are available to research key words. A good web host is also a necessity.

Some web hosts feature site builders with page tools to instantaneously create and publish your pages to the World Wide Web/Internet. Other web hosts, through programs like Microsoft Front Page, Dreamweaver, etc., allow you to create your own pages and then transfer the files to your web hosts server.

Meta tags, embedded in your web pages, are extremely important. Most people don’t realize how important Meta tags are. After the domain name, search engine algorithms look for Meta tags on your web site and web pages.

Meta tags usually consist of: a Title, a Description, a set of Keywords, a Robot command telling the search engine robots to index and follow your sites pages, a Copyright tag stating the owner of the content, an Author tag giving credit to the writer or writers of the content, a Revisit tag telling the search engines to come back and visit your site after certain daily increments. There are other meta tags but they are beyond the scope of this discussion.

Now let’s address the content of your web pages. I am sure you have heard the saying “Content is King”. Good content is essential to support your website and search engine rankings. Little or no content means little or no traffic to your website.

A great amount of research is required for good content. Do not write the content strictly for search engines, but do throw in key search words occasionally. Each page should correlate with your meta tags, and each page should have unique content.

Now let’s talk about the different types of linking strategies. One way links provide the best linking strategy and work with one domain name. Think about each link as a vote for your website by the Internet community. More links equals more votes, which equals more traffic from search engines and other websites. A second linking strategy is a reciprocal link – I give you a link on my domain, you give me a link back on the same domain.

Reciprocal linking works when sites are somewhat related. The reciprocal linking strategy works with 2 domain names. Automated tools are available to constantly check your links. 3 way linking is another common link building strategy, but be wary of the integrity of the linking webmaster. It’s very easy for a webmaster or an SEO firm to exchange links with you.

However, be careful that your link is not placed on one or more satellite sites creating a link farm (a big no no!) and/or their link site is taken down days, weeks or months later. This 3 way linking method works with 3 domain names. Other linking strategies involve hyper text links or anchor text.

You can recognize these links because the keyword or keyword phrase is sometimes underlined or animated; when one of these words is clicked, you are transported to the domain where these words reside.

If you like me, own rental holiday accommodation in Whitby, or any other part of the world, you probably want the highest possible occupancy levels, which equals in return a high rental income throughout the year. If you are not totally achieving this at the moment, I will explain briefly how I do, and so could you!

My own Endeavour holiday cottage in Whitby enjoys an occupancy level of almost 100% over 52 weeks of the year. We are actually spoilt for choice for bookings, often going for short term lets three or four days rather than full weeks because these are more profitable. We achieve this occupancy level because my Whitby holiday cottage website is on the first page of Google and all the other major search engines, for all the relevant keywords, and so receives hundreds of hits on the website each day throughout the year. The time and effort necessary to produce this kind of prominent high ranking position in search engines, produces financial rewards that far outweigh the costs of the work necessary to achieve it.

Latest statistics say that 86% of searches on Google are never going to beyond page two. If you think of the World Wide Web as a city, having your website on page one of the search engine in the first 10 listings is like having your shop on the main street, next to the entrance, of the biggest shopping precinct in history, where footfall is enormous. Customers are coming in and out of your shop all the time. Being beyond page two of Google is like being on the outskirts of town where few people pass your shop.

The majority of holiday cottages, flats, and caravan owners usually have a website that not ranked very well on search engines and so gets very little traffic. Often they rely on bookings from a large letting agent, who takes a percentage fee. These large letting agencies usually like myself have invested in a website which is ranked highly on search engines, which is good, but what lets this arrangement down for individual property owners is the large agencies usually have so many clients on their books, bookings are on the low side, along with the tariff unfortunately!

But if you followed my strategy of investing in an effective search engine optimisation campaign on your own holiday accommodation website, you could be competing with the big boys, the large letting agencies for good search engine rankings, and often beating them to better positions with your little old single letting accommodation website!

I was approached by a gentleman with a holiday cottage in Whitby which is good value for money in an excellent position, but in its third year of business, its annual gross turnover was less than 6000 UK pounds per year from a combination of bookings sources, large letting agency, and word of mouth and return business. The cottage occupancy levels are increasing slowly each year, but it will take a number of years for significant increases in turnover from this present arrangement.

We are now conducting an effective search engine optimisation campaign on this gentleman’s website and although it is costing him almost 2000 UK pounds per year paid for by monthly instalments, after the first three months of the SEO campaign, occupancy levels have significantly increased to over 80%. We are confidently projecting that year two will give the cottage a gross annual turnover in excess of 22,000 UK pounds.

If you would like to increase your business turnover from the Internet, we can offer you various solutions, which would result in an effective SEO on your business website, wherever you are located.

And if your business happens to be holiday accommodation in Whitby like my own, we could discuss the possibility of listing your accommodation on our holiday accommodation website. But I can hear you saying I have just condemned large agencies for their lack of bookings, well you’re correct but our agency, has a big difference in the fact we are small and we intend to stay that way. We are taking a maximum of 10 cottages and caravans, so that our client gets individual attention in all aspects, giving them personal friendly advice and actions.

Thank you Alan Davidson, I produced the information website for Whitby
Whitby self catering holiday cottage Whitby Holiday Cottage

It has always made sense to pay attention to Google. As the number one search engine in the world, every website has to care A LOT about Google’s organic search engine page rankings and has to register its pay per click ads with Google. It appears that there may be yet another reason to be absolutely positively sure that your retail website is registering on Google radar.

The website Google Blogoscoped is an unofficial reviewer of Google’s business activities and technical modifications to its offerings. On June 19, 2009, the editors mentioned that they have gotten a bit of confidential information on a new program that Google is intending to place into beta testing in the near future. It appears to be called something like Google Product Ads.

Google is apparently inviting selected members of its merchant advertisers group to participate in a beta test of the new program. In essence, Google will allow merchants to purchase high positions in its Google product search queries. So, if a user searched for children’s yellow rain boots, they would be rewarded with search results that include today’s features.

According to the information provided, the merchant pays only if there is actual sales conversion from the product ad listing.

Naturally, placement would be based upon commission rate.

This is actually an enormous breakthrough for advertisers wishing to give their products a premium position. Just think. The customer is searching for African beads and the Google search not only returns a list of websites that the customer needs to click on and page through to get what they want, but also a set of images of your African beads along with pricing. What a time savings advantage for searchers! Plus, conversions are likely to be higher when the searcher finds what they want quickly.

However, in order to be on the receiving end of this new and expeditious way of finding products, you need to have your Google-specific house in order. According to Google Blogoscoped, Google has suggested that ad rank will be determined by an algorithm of commission times quality. They quote a Google email that states: ‘The quality score takes into account the relevance of your product to the users query, conversion rate of the query and the matched product ad on Google, your account history, and other relevant factors.’

Google also stated that you the merchant will not be able to add keywords to the product ads. Google will be in charge of matching your products to the queries made by searchers. This means that you need to be sure that any product feeds that you supply to Google for this purpose are extremely accurate and designed to create the best possible match between the searcher and your product.

There does not yet seem to be any information about when Google plans to roll out the commercial version of this new feature. Keep your eyes open on this one.

Source verified wholesale UK wholesalers, dropshippers, dropship & drop shipping suppliers and UK importers now.

The power of the internet is phenominal. According to google there were over 174 million domain names in 2008. If you are smart with your internet choices you can reap amazing results.

Firstly question what your objective is for having a website. Is it a 24 hour a day shop window designed to increase turnover. Is it an information giving website that will free up your own resources? By this I mean phone calls, postage costs, and all associated costs with delivering company information to clients.
Maybe your objective is to offer premium support to your exisiting customers. Whatever your main objective is, it can form the begninning of an effective and rewarding web marketing plan.

There is more to it. Do you know that internet users are split into 3 sectors when they are using the internet to source products or services? If you are using your website to find new customers, or the unknown market as its known in the advertising world then its crucial to target those searchers who are ready to buy. Sure those browsing can increase visitor numbers but the key to success is finding new paying customers.

Websites can be created that look amazing, but what is often overlooked is that the internal framework, coding, and general foundations are not designed to ensure that the site can be found organically. Sites that perform are crafted with special and specific attention to internal detail.

Templated websites can be inflexible and sometimes impossible to optimise and as a result you make an investment that can never give you a return.

You would not believe the number of companies out there who have a wonderful striking website launched but no analytics. Analytics will allow you to view important data.

There are several things that you should keep in mind when choosing a SEO company.

SEO is extremely important to people who live off of the internet world, but have you ever wondered is your SEO Company ripping you off? Many companies will adamantly proclaim that they are not doing anything of the sort; they claim they are offering you the best services for your money, are they really?

Search engine optimization of your web pages are basically built so that the search engines such as Google, MSN, and Yahoo can recognize them when people put in a search terms. The engines feed off of particular keywords in order to attract people to your page where you are offering goods or services for anyone that may be interested in obtaining something.

However, with the growth of the internet and a plethora of SEO companies popping up all over the place, its hard to say if you are getting the best deal for your money or not. All of the companies will boast that they are the best in the business and they will be able to provide you with everything that you stand in need of. However, it’s hard to believe a company full of people that you don’t know.

If you are simply testing the waters with this SEO Company there are some things that you need to look into before shelving out any money to them. Obviously you want to ensure that your SEO Company is not ripping you off and you are getting the services that you paid for.

There are a few basic things that you should know in order to not get ripped off. The truth of the matter is bad companies give the good SEO companies a bad name as well. This is why you should not have to burden yourself with these horrid companies in order to get the services that you stand in need of.

The first thing that you need to notice about the company is how you came to choose them. If the company had someone cold call you without your permission obviously they are not a good company to choose. If their services are as good as they state no one should be calling you and basically begging you for your business.

The next thing that you need to be able to have access to is proof of the companies work. You need to be able to ensure that they can deliver what they say they can. Many people want high ranking pages on search engines, if you do not see that this company can deliver choose someone else.

The next thing is you should be able to speak with the person that will be working on your account. If you have several people doing different things for your site you should be able to talk to all the people that will be engaging on work to your site. This should include any writers, graphic designers and anything of the sort.

You need to be the one to ask the questions to be able to find out if your SEO Company is ripping you off. If the company does not have the answers that you want to hear, cease business with them immediately.

Before you start an Marketing campaign, go to Clickadvantage’s site for information on how to increase website traffic and more on search engine marketing services.

Search Engine Optimisation or SEO basically means getting your website to rank as high as possible in the search results without having to pay anything to the search engine and with this document no need to pay anyone!

How Is It Done?
Effective SEO is achieved by having a complete knowledge of the integral workings of the internet and expert knowledge of how to process this information and put it in place. There are a number of key factors that contribute to the success of your website, most notably Quality & Relevance and Popularity.

1) Quality: This covers things such as the folder structure of your site, site content, descriptions and keywords, ease of use and navigation. Relevance: Relevance generally refers to things such as your domain name, amount of content, external links from your site and your keywords and descriptions.
61% of small businesses with a website spend less than three hours per week marketing their website on and offline.

Things to consider:
Inbound Links (Who links to you?)
Site Build Quality
Meta Tags
Folder/URL Structure
Keywords And Description
Search Engine Submission
Quality of Competitors
Site Content

2) Popularity: We do not mean how many visits you get here (that is a large misconception) we mean who links to your website from their website e.g. industry sites, business directories etc.

Following the above method you should start to see results within days as opposed to months and be able to track your traffic to see your success.

Quality & Relevance
Quality refers to the following areas of your website;
1) Site Structure
2) Site Content
3) Navigation
4) External Links

Site Structure
The first thing to consider is obviously the domain name you choose. It is important for corporate identity and protects your brand to buy at least the .com and .co.uk for your company name but before starting your consumer facing website think about the relevance of your company name vs your product range.

For example if your company name is My Company Ltd and you sold building materials, is www.mycompany.com the right domain name to use or would buildingmaterials.com be better?

A good idea is to have both, the first for a corporate website describing your business and history etc. and a domain name that better describes your actual products for an ecommerce enabled site.

Another option is use a subdomain of your corporate website such as http://buildingmaterials.mycompany.com.

For static websites the structure of your website is vital when it comes to search engines visiting your site, it needs to be setup in a way that the ’spiders’ can easily find their way around and understand what they are looking at.

Firstly make sure that where possible your page names reflect their content e.g. a page about lawnmowers should not be called ‘product12.html’ but be called ‘lawnmowers.html’. This then also applies to your folders on your web server, for the same example this should be something like http://www.mycompany.com/gardening-products/lawnmowers.html

Notice the separating of the folder/category title in this example being ‘gardening-products’ as opposed to ‘gardeningproducts’ adding the ‘-’ makes the URL clearer and easier to read. For page titles and images separate words with either ‘_’ or ‘-’, avoid using spaces as these are replaced by ‘%20′ in the internet browsers.

Do note this does not apply to dynamically created websites such as most hosted online shops.

Sitemap
You should also include a sitemap.xml file on the root of your server. This is essentially a simply formatted text file that provides information about all of the pages in your website in one file.

John E, Media Relations Adviser Easily.co.uk – Domain name registration, register your low cost domain name today!
