Finding Magazines to Read Online

July 18, 2008 · Filed Under Ezines and Newsletters · Comment

Earlier, if you wanted to subscribe to a magazine, the only way was to go and purchase one, fill out the subscription slip which was attached inside and post it along with your check. The magazine would then start arriving at your residence from the next month of circulation. Many times, the check would get misplaced and the entire procedure would have to be repeated.

But now, all you have to do is log on to the Internet, go to the site of your favorite magazine and start reading or downloading after giving your credit card number. The subscription charges are automatically deducted from your balance. No check to be posted and no waiting for the magazine to arrive by mail.

Many magazines are also available for free on the Internet. A quick search on Google will provide you with a number of sites where you can read or download magazines for free. An online magazine not only provides you more information on any topic you like, but also provides you new information on any subject you might want to learn about, and that too, in minutes. So, for example, if you would like to import a product and you want to know the product’s availability in China or Germany, with just a few clicks you can have all the information at your fingertips. This can be really helpful in your business.

For your leisure, too, online magazines can be very helpful. For example, you can learn a lot about maintaining your health and also about various diseases and their cures over the Internet. However, it is best to use this information as a base and not depend on it completely. Thanks to the Internet, you can read all types of magazines available throughout the world, unlike traditional stores where you may find only local magazines.

Online books and magazines are getting popular by the day because you can download and read the magazines at your convenience. There are many practical advantages to reading magazines online. First of all, you save a lot of space, since you no longer need space to store your magazines. All the magazines can be stored in the hard disk of your computer. Secondly, you do not have to worry about disposing off old magazines, just press ‘delete’. You also save trees from getting chopped down to make your favorite magazine, and you need have no worries about the old magazines getting infested with bugs either. The only fun you may miss out is that you cannot curl up in bed with your laptop or desktop. But that invention, too, might not be too far off.

So, go ahead, surf the net. There are many sites which offer free magazines and many other sites which can provide you monthly e-magazines. Keep your credit card ready and start reading your favorite magazine online.

Understanding the Zipcodes Used in the US

June 23, 2008 · Filed Under Ezines and Newsletters · Comment

The US Postal Service uses zipcodes as part of the addresses so that it can direct the mail to the appropriate person. The ZIP part of the word is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan. The basic format of all zip codes consists of five numbers, In 1983 a ZIP + 4 format was introduced, which consists of the basic five numbers, a hyphen and then four more numbers.

The process of using zip codes for pieces of mail in the US started in 1943 when the US Post Office started using codes to identify large cities within states. This was the brainchild or a postal worker, Robert Moon, who submitted his proposal to the Postal service in 1941. A more general system was introduced in the early 1960′s and a zip cods for the entire country came into effect in 1963. Moon’s proposal was to use three digits to identify each sectional center facility in the country and this system is still in effect. The five digits consist of the number for the sectional facility and the postal code for the city in the state. For example the zip code for Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania is 16820. The numbers 168 refer to the sectional center facility and the numbers 20 refers to the postal code for Pennsylvania.

In 1963, zip cods were only used for first class mail and it wasn’t until 1967 that packages and second and third class mail were required to use them in the addresses. In the ZIP + 4, system now in use, the additional four digits are used to identify a geographic region. The code is transferred to a bar code which the sorting machinery used in the post offices can use to make sure the mail goes to the appropriate locality. For addresses with post office boxes, the add on digits refer to the post office box number. However, unlike the regular zip codes for cities, there is no uniform code for post office boxes. If you want to send mail to a particular address you would have to look up the full 12-digit zip code.

The first digit of the zip code represents a geographical area of the country, such as a group of states. Together with this digit and the next two, the mail goes to the appropriate facility where the mail is sorted once again. The fourth and fifth digits of the zip code refer to the addresses within a specific region. Usually the main city in a region receives the first zip code and then the surrounding towns and cities receive zip codes in alphabetical order following that initial zip code according to the name of the city or town.

Most of the lowest zip code numbers are in the New England states, since they all start with 0. Other postal codes beginning with 0 are the US Internal Revenue Service, Adjuntas, Puerto Rico and cities starting with A in this region. New York State has the initial digit of 1, so the zip codes of all addresses in New York start with 1.
