Technology is confusing. That’s the end all, this is the truth that many of us have to learn to accept. Gigabits (which can be converted to megabits) just mean that your signaling rate is one thousand megabits per second. In other words, one gigabit equates to a thousand megabits.

This kind of Ethernet is a step above a hundred megabit Ethernet or “Fast Ethernet”. It is also a step below ten thousand megabit or ten gigabit Ethernet, which is measured at ten thousand megabits per second. When you look at it this way it’s easy to understand the unit of measurement used most often when you are dealing with this kind of information.

It is often seen at 10GbE or 10GBase-X. Don’t get confused by the word “base” if you run across it. All that means it that the line is unfiltered and doesn’t need a modulation to run. Base lines are very common now even though they weren’t as easy to find in the past.

Remember the computers and all of their components make leaps and bounds every year. There is a great deal more to understanding the way gigabit Ethernet works. There are different levels, cables, and more speeds to learn about. Still, with the basics down you’re more likely to get it the first time. Don’t quit if you don’t get something the first time, everyone starts somewhere.
