How A short Conversation Changed a Life
It was a cold night when Mike, a rookie trucker, slowly maneuvered his rig out of the haulers yard. This was his maiden run and trucking was not his passion in life, but in this truck he had a sofa/bed, microwave and a small refrigerator which was more than he had in the tiny room he rented. Every tiny thing seemed to be holding him up that night, he set off late and new he would have to put his foot down.
Things had always been pretty easy for Mike but not long ago he had walked out of the seminary where his intention had been to become a priest. His mom had taken ill and he had prayed harder than he ever had by her bedside and was sure that God would make his mom better but she slowly slipped away.
Surely this was not what was supposed to happen? Their family had never done anything wrong, they had been church goers and he had prayed his very hardest. Where was God and why had he let them down? Mike needed to get away from it all but he had to earn money too so he look the money his mom left him and enrolled in truck driving school. Long journeys alone and time to re-evaluate his life.
He had not been on his way for long when he switched on the radio, it had been left on channel 19 and immediately began to hiss and tweet then a distant voice said, ‘Breaker 1-9 is anybody there, truckers please come back and talk to me, it’s Lindyloo, oh please come back to me’.
Mike waited, he wasn’t exactly au fait with this, no one replied, so he pressed the button and said, ‘Hello Lindyloo how can I help’, It was obvious that he knew next to nothing about this but the voice said, ‘Who have I got on the other end and what’s your ‘handle’? Mike replied with the name of the trucking company and that ‘Michaelangelo’ was his handle.
It turned out that ‘Lindyloo’ had been alone in the house, her father was at a conference and her mother visiting, she herself had been getting ready to go out and had slipped and fallen down the stairs, she was in a great deal of pain and couldn’t get up, however she had been able to reach the CB radio was hoping to get help. Immediately Mike said he would be happy to help. Where did she live? She only just got her address out before she fell silent.
The address was only a couple of blocks away so it wasn’t long before Mike rolled up the drive of a beautiful plantation style house. He rang and rang the bell but no one answered, he tried all the doors, they were all locked but at last he found one small window open and climbed in.
There on a grand marble staircase lay a very pretty blond girl of about his own age. She was unconscious and had clearly fallen down the stairs. He gave her first aid, got the ambulance and followed it to hospital, he waited for the doctors report and phoned her father and her mother with the information. Then he stayed with the girl until they came.
Through all this he had the image of a rather ugly box sitting on a very elegant Italian desk by the side of the stairs and wondered why it should be there, the two just did not go together.
That same rather ugly box is still on the elegant desk, though it isn’t in use, it serves as a reminder of that night when Mike took Linda to hospital, her father turned out to be the owner of the trucking company.
The rest is history, Mike and Linda are bringing their children up in that same house and now own three trucking companies. Mike now realizes that everything happens for a reason, and all because of CB radio.
