Photographer In Los Angeles – It’s Tough Work

August 28, 2010 · Filed Under Photography

In many ways, being a photographer in Los Angeles is like being a cab driver in New York City – they’re everywhere, and you can’t avoid running into one. It seems fitting that so many people want to take pictures in the image capital of the country; after all, the paparazzi call this city home. With so many photographers running about, either trying to outscoop each other to get the latest picture of a celebrity at their hideaway house in the hills or outbidding a competitor for a plum fashion shoot, the competition can get ugly at times. How does a photographer cope with the pressure, you ask?

A photographer in Los Angeles has to learn to have patience. You won’t be a successful photographer overnight, so if it means taking a few jobs in the valley to support yourself, go ahead and do it. It might help to choose a specialty in order to get a steady stream of clients coming in. There are photographers right now who make a living taking wedding pictures in Orange County. There is plenty of money to be made along the Santa Ana Freeway, so go ahead and take the cash if it comes.

Fashion photography has a smaller pool of candidates to choose from – not because of lack of supply, but from the fashion industry having a “soft” restriction on who gets to photograph. Smaller companies usually have no such restrictions, but the larger, better known companies have a set list of photographers that they use all the time. They won’t leave these kinds of jobs to an amateur or a professional just starting out. A photographer in Los Angeles trying to get into fashion photography will generally need to do excellent work and build up a reference list of reputable clients before the big clients start calling.

Given the large amount of competition in the marketplace, it’s remarkable that any photographer in Los Angeles is able to make a living. Nonetheless, there are opportunities available. Photography, much like any other profession, tends to divide itself into niches, with people migrating to specialize in those niches. Just as there are people who comb through Orange County for the next suburban wedding to shoot, there are others who pound the pavement in Hollywood trying to get a snapshot of your favorite celebrity trying to shop. Photographers just need to find what they like to shoot and go do it. There’s enough room for everyone to do that.
