As one of the more unusual foods to make a name for itself as a staple of popular western cuisine, avocados have a strange history. “Discovered” by conquistadores during the first visits to the Americas, avocados looked and tasted unlike anything European palates had ever known. At the same time, there was something about the avocado that captivated imaginations and kept us coming back for more.

In part, our obsession with avocados has something to do with the flavor. Mild yet aromatic yet distinct, avocados pair well with strong, spicy flavors. The texture too, especially when ripe, offers the comforting richness of butter. And yet, as romanticized as the avocado may have been, there’s still something inexplicable about the way we yearn for them. Even though many people have offered explanations, it may all be as simple as a matter of nutrition.

As of this moment, according to the Guinness Book of World records, the healthiest food in existence is the avocado. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy oils, bursting with over twenty different essential nutrients, chock full of phytochemicals and antioxidants that have an innumerable variety of beneficial effects on the body.

Although avocados once earned a bad reputation for their high calorie and fat content, they’ve been redeemed over the past decade or two. Now that we understand how certain fats affect our cardiovascular system, we’ve come to realize that the fats found in avocados do us nothing but good. The avocado’s high concentrations of monounsaturated fatty acids has been shown to significantly reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and help ward off heart disease.

Avocados are also a superior source of over twenty different nutrients, including potassium, folate, copper, and vitamins C, B6, E, and K. Avocados are also rich in the antioxidants lutein and zea-xanthin, compounds that promote eye heath and prevent age related problems like cataracts. And studies have shown that when eaten in conjunction with tomatoes, avocados help our bodies absorb four and a half more times the amount of cancer-fighting lycopene.

Extracts taken from avocados have additionally been shown to have even more powerful applications. One such extract has clinically proven to kill off pre-cancerous cell growth that leads to oral cancers. Other extracts have been successfully used to treat osteoarthritis. And as researchers continue to explore the many wonders of the avocado, its almost certain that even more incredible uses for the avocado will be discovered.

When incorporating avocado into your diet, experts recommend using it in place of fats or eating it along with other fresh vegetables. For instance, instead of spreading mayo on your sandwich, add a few slices of avocado instead. Its heart-healthy fats will help lower your cholesterol, and its high fiber content will help with your digestion and metabolism. It’s also great when added to salads, fresh salsas, pastas, and more. Remember, regardless of how you manage to work a little avocado into your day, every little bit will help!

Everyone has seen the word, maybe heard it on the television, radio, and even on billboards. The acai berry and the diet associated with it. But what is it exactly and why is there a huge fuss about it?

First of all, the acai berry has been used for many generations by native Brazilians. It is a small round berry usually blackish purple in color, resembling a grape or blueberry but smaller. It has a large seed with minimal pulp and provides maximum juice.

It is found in some palm trees that can reach heights of 82 feet in the Amazon rain forest and that is where it is largely grown and harvested. Unlike cherries and most other fruit however, it grows in bunches, much like bananas, instead of individually. Each tree, on average, can yield anywhere from three to eight bunches of acai berries.

What is so great about this small berry and why has it become a huge name in the diet industry? The Acai berry has been labeled as an antioxidant.

It is rich in omega fats, protein, electrolytes, amino acids, antioxidants, and vitamins A, E and B1. It has been known for the health benefits it provides including management of digestive problems, insomnia, skin issues and even sexual dysfunction.

Especially as word travels about this amazing berry and its benefits, people are discovering new and exciting ways it has helped them in daily life. Consuming it has made people simply feel more energized and healthy. Not only that, but researchers have even revealed that in a study, Acai berries actually destroyed leukemia cells in a culture.

It still remains to be seen that the Acai berry will destroy cancer altogether, but the studies so far have been promising.

Not only has the Acai berry become famous all over the world for ground breaking new researches, but it is also great tasting. It has been incorporated into so many dishes since its discovery that it is common knowledge to see it on menus in most places.

Used as both the sweet berry it is on top of ice cream, in smoothies, shakes and even breakfast bars, it is also used as a great additional flavor in meat and fish dishes, along with various other entrees. However, the fact that most people find so surprising is that the berry itself should not be picked and eaten just as it is.

The berry is harvested, processed and the acai comes from the pulp of the berry. Even more surprising to some people is the fact that the acai drinks and juice is more popular in the southern hemisphere than milk. This is due largely to the fact that the South Americans know they are getting a healthy, nutritious drink that will give them energy and alertness throughout the day.

One of the best benefits about this berry is the fact that there are no known or reported side effects. It has not been completely examined and being a relatively new product in the United States it is still being observed. But most reports back are that this is a very promising good.

Acai is available in all different forms all across the globe. The internet has become a fast hot spot to purchase the popular berry and its many varieties.

It is in extremely high demand as more and more people become aware of the benefits, but when shopping for it, you must be sure that you are getting the real thing. Labels are very important and make absolutely sure to check them.

Snacks can be a dangerous thing. That is, if we forget or overlook the real purpose of food in the first place. When we remember, snacks can be a powerful ‘tool’ for maximizing your health and performance.

Food is a source of FUEL. It provides energy and the raw materials for every function our bodies and minds need to perform.

I believe that we should be snacking – or re-fueling – at regular intervals throughout the day. This keeps our tanks topped off, so to speak. Every 2-4 hours, depending on activity levels and several other factors, we should supply a high quality, balanced snack in order to maximize all physiologic, mental & emotional functions.

Quality and quantity of fuel is of critical importance. The point of eating is not just to insert enough of a chewable substance in order to feel fullness in our bellies! “Filling up”, with little concern for the source of the filler, is not our primary focus if Health is something we’re interested in!

Cruddy fuel equals cruddy performance… regardless of whether or not we can ‘feel’ this happening. It’s basic physiology.

Unfortunately, we seem to forget this, particularly when it comes to snacks.

Understandably, it somehow seems easier to ’stray’ from healthy choices when that tummy starts rumbling between meals. Oftentimes, we’re on-the-go, or at work or school… living life between meals. We’re inundated with the marketing of “snack foods” that are quick, easy, convenient, cheap, tasty, and come in handy-dandy little packages, many of them showing off their lovely little calorie count or “low-fat” properties right on the front of the wrapper and tricking us into thinking that *that* must somehow make them healthy!

It doesn’t matter how many calories or how much fat a food or drink has if it’s made from toxic, chemical junk. Toxicity drives the stress response, causing our brains to produce a cascade of stress hormones affecting every single function throughout our bodies. Once in awhile and temporarily? Our brains and bodies can more effectively deal with the acute stress of toxicity. Sadly, our addiction to toxic, chemical “food” is not a once in awhile thing!

You may have thought you were doing the right thing, especially for weight loss, by choosing low-calorie, low-fat, diet or sugar-free options. But if the calories, fat and sugar have been decreased via toxic processing, or adding toxic ingredients or removing essential nutrients, you’ve been unknowingly sabotaging your efforts for better health and a better body. One of the stress hormones released is cortisol, which can cause you to GAIN weight and have a tougher time shedding it.

What’s the solution? Healthier choices, of course!

Instead of reaching for those packaged snacks, stick to the basic “rules” of Nutrition that you probably know you should be following during meal time:

Eat REAL foods – not packaged, synthetic, factory foods.

Your snacks should come from healthy sources of protein, natural fats and fresh fiber (vegetables and fruit). Water is the drink of choice.

Whenever possible, choose CLEAN options that are closest to their naturally occurring state – that might mean organic, or it could mean free-range, grass-fed, free of antibiotics, hormones, steroids, nitrates, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, artificial flavors, MSG, hydrolyzed or partially hydrolyzed fats, and so on.

Keep it real and keep it clean.

Our health would be greatly enhanced if we’d start looking at snacks as ‘mini meals’… not just that filler I talked about earlier!

On the go and “too busy” to prepare a healthy snack? For a nice balance of protein, natural fats and some fresh fiber, pack some nuts (like almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc.) and some fresh veggies or fruit. When possible, choose raw nuts since this reduces the oxidation of those pesky polyunsaturated fats.

Nuts are great for many reasons. Because of their nice mix of healthy fats, protein, fiber, and all their antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, they meet many of our cellular requirements for optimal function. They also help us feel satisfied and ‘full’. They’re a great choice if you’re looking to shed some pounds of excess fat – they’ll keep your metabolism boosted and control your appetite. Bonus!

I didn’t mention grains or dairy as snack options, did I? I won’t open that can of worms too wide in this article, except to say that leading nutrition experts agree that we require clean sources of protein, naturally occurring fats (ALL types of natural fats), and fiber (especially from fresh sources like vegetables and fruit). Modern day, refined and highly processed toxic cereal grains and dairy don’t make the cut as far as cellular requirements go.

If you’re going to consume grains or dairy, or feed them to your kids, make sure they’re as non-toxic and untainted as possible, as close to their natural source as possible, and limit your intake. Sprouted whole grains and raw, unpasteurized, non-homogenized dairy are considered the safest, most nutritionally valuable sources. As part of an overall healthy and balanced diet, and in appropriate quantities, I believe these high quality sources of grains and dairy can be just fine.

In our family, we have some “food agreements” in order to help us consistently build better health and avoid the risk factors for illness. One of those agreements is that our snacks must include real, “live” foods. That means, even on those days when I may be in a bigger hurry than usual and I provide an organic, whole grain &/or raw food bar as a snack, the kids know they need some fresh, live food along with it. And, no “grainy” snacks or “grainy” meals back-to-back. The same goes for dairy.

We don’t snack on junk because I don’t keep it in the house. If I did, I’d snack on junk! Out of sight, out of mind. More accurately: out of house, out of mouth! If you’re currently a junk-a-holic at snack time, try leaving it out of your shopping cart. If it doesn’t make it into your cart, the chances are better that you’ll eat less of it overall.

Anyhow, try this for a week or two. Think of snacks the same way you’d think about preparing healthy meals. Snacks are a source of FUEL for you two, three or four times per day. You owe it to yourself to think about them more carefully than food manufacturers and advertisers would like you to!

Many people are familiar with licorice as a tasty candy. You are probably very familiar with the red or black vine-style licorice sold in stores and vending machines or large plastic tubs. Some people only prefer sweeter licorice like red vines and give the stronger, less sweet black licorice to someone else. Whichever kind is preferred, kids and adults alike love to eat it on holidays, at the movie theater or anywhere or anytime a simple treat is desired. But not many people understand fully the extent of the functionality of licorice. Licorice is a natural herb that can benefit humans through consumption as food and medicine.

Licorice starts as a root. It can be prepared in a variety of natural ways, be consumed as a supplement, or applied topically to help heal sores. Licorice is a great blood cleanser and helpful for use in lower bowel treatments. The herb neutralizes acid in blood. It also aids in cleansing the liver and other glands by stimulation circulation, assimilating nutrients, and relieving digestion. Licorice root also offers quick recovery to fatigued muscles such as experienced by athletes. Herbal licorice teas are also recommended to prevent and treat early childhood illnesses. Because licorice serves to clean the body internally, it can also be used to address kidney issues.

PMS symptoms are also relieved by licorice herbal combination treatments. Herbs like licorice protect the reproductive organs from the affects of artificial hormones or other potentially harmful antibiotics from meat and mild food products. Female health is further promoted by licorice’s calming effects on the adrenal glands and ability to help prevent estrogen accumulation and subsequent breast or uterine issues. Licorice is frequently used to heal coughs by relieving congestion and releasing toxins.

You can find licorice often included on various cleansing and weight loss diets with the added benefit of a strengthened immune system. One significant study and use of licorice specifically concerns its stimulation of the immune system. There is a component in licorice that helps produce interferon which assists in counteracting viruses and cancer by regulating immune cells. Interferon also increases the production of cancer fighting T-Cells. Since licorice cleanses the body and boosts the immune system, especially the liver, it also promotes health by fighting addictions. While significant diet changes and elimination of other elements fight addiction, the cleansing effects of licorice allow proper nutrients to diminish or prevent some addictions before they start.

Many people are not aware there is a healthier Japanese herbal tea than Green teas, called Tenchicha. The tea contains 12 herbs with no caffeine. Mr. Kumagai is the president of Eco Vita, which provides information on health benefits of herbal products including tenchicha. For more detail, please visit Tenchicha.com.

It is well known that there is a correlation between drinking water and weight loss. The human body is made up mostly of water and therefore requires it to operate in the best possible capacity. The majority of people do not drink enough water. Since the body is made up of water and requires it for health, it plays a key role in the body’s metabolism, which is its ability to burn fat.

The liver is the main organ responsible for processing fat, but when the body does not have enough water for the kidneys to do their job, the liver also has to take the kidney’s job function–which decreases the liver’s ability to break down and remove fat from the body. Increasing water intake will help the kidneys work for themselves, which will help take the stress off the liver, allowing it to process fat at its optimal rate.

When people exercise and eat right, including increasing water intake, they are taking steps to boost their body’s fat metabolism, which will help with weight loss as well. Though caffeine may boost the body’s fat burning power, it is actually a diuretic which pulls water from the body. Trading caffeine for water is a great way to stay healthy. Though it will keep people running to the bathroom for a while, this is only because the body is flushing the stores of stuff it was holding on to, because it didn’t know where its next supply of water was coming from. Once a person drinks enough water for a while, the frequency of urination declines and life returns to normal.

How Water Suppresses Appetite

In addition to how the water works in the body to help the organs that play a role in fat metabolism, it can also work as an appetite suppressant to help people eat less and stop craving. By drinking a full glass of water about 30 minutes before eating a meal. This fills the stomach with water, thereby letting people eat less and producing a full feeling. By eating less food, but more of the right kinds of food, energy is still there to do all the activities, including exercise, to get through the day and help reach weight loss goals faster.

How to Make Water Taste Better

Drinking water and weight loss is not easy for most of us, because we cannot stand the taste of water. The best thing to do is to install a water filter system to enhance the quality and taste of the water that comes from the tap. This saves money and eliminates the waste of bottled water. If after installing the water filter, the taste is still not manageable, try adding small amounts of lemon juice, or using a low calorie drink mix to change the flavor. Adding the extra flavor can fool the body into feeling as though it is getting something “bad” that is still incredibly healthy while also providing variety of flavor options.

Adding an antioxidants supplement into your daily diet can really help to lower the free radical damage caused by the stresses of everyday life. Pollution, anxiety, poor food choices, even exercise all add to the overall damage to our cells. How do antioxidants help prevent this damage? First let’s discuss what they are and then how they can help us.

What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances that fight the free radical damage our cells experience when they are exposed byproducts as a result of oxidation. They work to slow down or prevent the damage to our cells and are therefore a very important part of our diet. Some of the most common antioxidants are: vitamin A and carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, flavonoids/polyphenols, lycopene, lutein, and lignan. These antioxidants are found in a variety of foods such as: carrots, squash, nuts, seeds, berries, leafy greens, citrus fruits, peppers, fish, red meat, chicken, soy and red wine.

Free radical damage contributes to conditions such as: heart disease, macular degeneration, cancer, diabetes, and more. Making sure to get plenty of antioxidants in your diet is a good way to help prevent these conditions. That said, however, simply adding antioxidants into your diet will not completely eliminate the risk for developing these health conditions.

What are Antioxidants Supplements?

Antioxidants supplements are multi-vitamins, though they may be found in other supplements. Many people take an antioxidants supplement without even realizing it. The supplements are natural or synthesized vitamins and nutrients designed to help people make sure they are getting everything they need for their bodies whether they get it from the foods they eat on a regular basis. The supplements are available in variety of capacities and are produced by many different companies. For instance, people can purchase one vitamin, such a vitamin C, or get one vitamin that contains many of them. Supplementation is common, and easy.

Should You Take Antioxidants Supplements?

There are some people who say taking antioxidants supplements is not good for you, while others insist that getting them through supplements is better than not getting them at all. While anything that comes directly from a food source is better for you than getting it from a supplement, your body can suffer greatly if it goes without a particular vitamin or antioxidant for long periods of time. The reason doctors recommend getting the nutrients from natural food sources is because the absorption from the supplements is minimal at best and may not actually provide a lot of extra help.

Certain antioxidants, such as vitamin C are incredibly easy to get a full day’s supply of through diet, while others, such as lycopene can be bard to get if you don’t like tomatoes. If you have a family history of conditions such as heart disease or diabetes, it is incredibly important to live a healthier lifestyle and possibly include antioxidants supplements to help avoid getting these conditions.

Antioxidants play a role in all the systems of our body. They strengthen our immune system, keep our skin looking youthful and firm, and help reduce the chances of cancer forming. The body also produces a few of its own antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, and catalase. Though these antioxidants are produced by the body they may also be available in supplement form.

Many people just do not seem to have the energy to make it through the day. They seem to wake up tired and are sluggish all day long. What can a person do to enhance their energy levels? One idea is to get more sleep. With the action packed, got to do more world we live in, then we just simply try to put too much into a day. Whether it is staying up to party or to work, we should try and put aside some of the daily tasks we are struggling to maintain. Our health will be better for it.

So lack of sleep is not your problem, but you are still having problems with your energy levels. You probably should check with your doctor. If he gives you a clean bill of health, then there are some other energy booster tricks that can keep you going during the day.

Bee pollen is a great energy food. You can take one teaspoon of granular bee pollen, or two 500 mg bee pollen pills after breakfast. Of course if you are allergic to bees or their pollen, this would not be a good idea. You should probably start small to make sure you are not allergic, then slowly increase the dosage. You will be amazed at the increased levels of energy you have.

Ceyenne pepper is another quick picker-upper. Why wouldn’t it be? Can you imagine taking a dose of that everyday? Anyway, if you place 1/8 teaspoon in a cup of water and drink it, it will give you additional energy. Ceyenne pepper can also be a substitute for coffee. Mix 1 teaspoon to 1 quart of juice, without sugar additive. You may use any kind of juice. If you are on a long drive or are studying for a test and feel the need for coffee, drink down this mixture. It will help keep you going.

Squeezing the juice of half of a grapefruit into a glass of warm water is another way to increase your energy levels. Drink the juice mixture slowly, and then eat the rest of the grapefruit. You will be amazed at what it does for your energy levels. It will also increase your pucker power.

Those who are suffering from mental fatigue may choose to eat an apple for energy. Cut an apple up into small pieces, leaving the skin on the apple. Place the apple in a small bowl and pour 2 cups of boiling water over the apple. Let this sit for about 2 hours. Then you can drink the juice and eat the apple.

Make sure you are getting enough water. Water is a great liquid that people simply do not get enough of. Energy drinks have become the fad when all we actually needed was to drink more water. Our bodies are mostly water, which needs to be replenished often.

Another crazy idea is to stimulate your ears. By stimulating your ears, you are sending a wake-up call to the rest of your body. So sit back and give your ears a gentile rubdown. Stimulating your scalp will also help. Spend about two minutes doing this exercise, and your blood flow will begin to increase.

Speaking of exercise, running in place for two minutes will also stimulate you, and give you more energy. If you are feeling down at work, then go to the bathroom and run in place. This will help to keep you going for the remainder of the day.

Good luck with your energy level boosters. Pick those items that work for you and then go for it. We can all use a little more energy in our lives.

Most people fall off the “diet wagon” primarily because of hunger and lack of energy. They start the weight loss process optimistic and gung-ho. Many do juice and water fasting for thirty days and beyond. They lose massive amounts of weight and return to eating with a renewed commitment to make permanent eating-habit changes.

However, they do not eat the “premium” fuel that will regulate hunger and keep energy levels steady throughout the day. Within days or weeks, old eating habits reemerge and, so, the diet yo-yo continues – ad infinitum. This happened to me many times. I was always hungry and weak… not to mention very grumpy – just like Fred Flintstone when dinner was late!

But all of this changed when I moved away from simply counting calories to actually learning about and eating “high quality foods.” Here’s my message for you in this article: More than simply counting calories, consider the actual quality of the food that you are eating. I’ll give you some immediate help so that you can find some relief right away.

Below are four foods that are delicious and nutritious. Best of all, they provide high-quality fuel to keep your energy and vitality up as the numbers on the scale go down. Moreover, regular consumption will help calm that hunger monster so that you can press on with your fasting, dieting and/or fitness endeavors. Ok, let’s dive in!

Nuts and Seeds: Packed with protein and healthy fats, nuts and seeds are a great snack choice that keep your tummy satisfied and provide your body with high-quality energy. They are high in calories so you will want to keep your portions in check; one serving is about an ounce.

Green Vegetables: Veggies like broccoli, asparagus and spinach contain plentiful amounts of vitamins like beta-carotene (helps boost your immune system to fight off infections), folic acid (heart health), vitamin C (another great immune system booster), and magnesium (beneficial in regulating blood pressure, proper muscle function and more).

Even better, green vegetables are rich in dietary fiber, which helps “keep things moving” through your intestines, which helps flush toxins from your body regularly – no wonder they can boost energy and vitality!

Whole Grains: You may have heard that “carbs are bad,” but not all carbs are equal! Complex carbohydrates like whole grains are high in fiber and are digested more slowly than simple carbs, so they are less likely to create a spike in blood sugar (and the inevitable “crash” later on).

Whole grains also contain plenty of B vitamins, which can help boost energy (especially vitamin B12). Good sources of whole grains include whole wheat or multi-grain bread and crackers, brown rice, oatmeal, barley, and bran cereal.

Fruit: Fruit is a great source of energy for your body because many varieties are packed full of vitamins and fiber, and many are even rich in antioxidants that help prevent cell damage.

Keep in mind that some fruits are very high in sugar, which could work against you if you’re trying to stick to a low-glycemic eating plan. Fruits that are low to medium in sugar content would include: lemons, limes, grapefruit, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries.

Include these foods in your diet regularly and you will find that hunger diminishes and your energy levels will be much more steady. This is the gift that keeps on giving.

To go through the day feeling good, energized and not “starving” or grumbling because I can’t eat that pizza or donut that I am craving. There is nothing like it!

I hope that you get to experience this amazing sense of freedom. I dont’ know about you, but I did not lose weight, fast and/or work out at the gym as hard as I did to be miserable, did you?

And a lot of times people are miserable in their diets simply because they are not eating the right types of foods. We must take the time and become explorers of the best foods available for our bodies. Just a light diet modification as described above can make all of the difference – although some do not agree.

One gentleman that I coached some months ago was adamant that it was the same to eat 1,000 calories in cheeseburgers as it was to eat 1,000 calories in fruit and vegetables. “One-thousand calories is a thousand calories, right”, he would ask. The answer is: definitely not!

A 100-calorie cookie and a 100-calorie serving of antioxidant-rich berries are miles apart in quality. A cookie may help satisfy your craving for sweets, but it’s not going to provide quality fuel for your body.

In addition, the refined sugar in a cookies, donuts, pastries and similar snacks will – over time – foster an addiction that will create severe cravings. Perhaps you already know what I am talking about. Being addicted to sugar is NO fun at all and can seriously impair your health. So the bottom line is: food quality is the key to long-term success!

Essential fatty acids are such an important topic These fatty acids are the “good fats,” all over the news these days, and a very hot research topic. More is known about them every week as more studies come advance.

It is important to lessen the intake of trans fats and cholesterol (animal fat) while consuming sufficient good fats. One of the jobs of this high-density lipoprotein (hdl) or “good cholesterol” is to capture your bad cholesterol, ldl (low density lipoprotein), and guide it to the liver where it is broken down and excreted. In other words, these good fats attack some of the harm already done by the bad fats. This is very important in an age when so many Americans are under pressure to get their cholesterol down, and fight heart disease and obesity.

Essential fatty acids are principally used to produce hormone-like substances that regulate a wide range of functions, including blood pressure, blood clotting, blood lipid levels, the Immune response, and the inflammation reaction to injury infection. Essential fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids and are the parent compounds of the omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acid series, respectively.

They are vital in the human diet because there is no synthetic mechanism for them. Humans can without difficulty make saturated fatty acids or monounsaturated fatty acids with a double bond at the omega-9 position, but do not have the enzymes needed to introduce a double bond at the omega-3 position or omega-6 position. The essential fatty acids are important in several human body systems, including the immune system and in blood pressure regulation. The brain has bigger amounts of inoleic and alpha-linolenic acid derivatives. Changes in the levels and balance of these fatty acids due to a classic western diet rich in omega-6 and poor in omega-3 fatty acids is alleged.

Essential fatty acids are required to retain healthy lipid levels in the blood. Another important function is controlling inflammation in cases of infection or injury. While we tend to think of all forms of fats as bad or unhealthy, it is important to recognize that certain fats, namely fatty acids, are essential for optimum health.

Essential fatty acids are indispensable because they provide the building blocks for numerous ‘eicosanoids’. Many of these hormone-like chemicals are also called prostaglandins. Those not having essential fatty acids are notably more likely to be hyperactive, have learning disorders, and to present behavioral problems. ” Omega-3 deficiencies have also been coupled to dyslexia,” violence, depression, memory problems, weight gain, cancer, heart disease, eczema, allergies, inflammatory diseases, arthritis, diabetes, and countless other conditions. ” over 2,000 scientific studies have confirmed the wide range of problems associated with omega-3 deficiencies.

“The American diet is almost devoid of omega 3’s except for certain types of fish. ” in fact, researchers believe that about 60% of Americans are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, and about 20% have so little that test methods cannot even detect. ,” just as your muscles are made of protein and your bones are made of calcium.

Signs of Fatty Acid Imbalance

Dry skin, dandruff, frequent urination, irritability, Attention Deficit Disorder, soft nails, alligator skin, allergies, lowered immunity, weakness, fatigue, dry, unmanageable hair, excessive thirst, brittle, easily frayed nails, hyperactivity
“chicken skin” on backs of arms, dry eyes, learning problems, poor wound healing, frequent infections, patches of pale skin on cheeks, and cracked skin on heels or fingertips are all signs of fatty acid imbalance.

Eating out at a restaurant is a pleasurable experience as far as getting waited on and enjoying the relaxing atmosphere. But the other side to it is that it can wind up being more fattening than just enjoying a meal at home.

There’s nothing wrong with letting a restaurant cook for you – as long as you do some thinking ahead and special requesting when you order. Here are some tips to keep in mind for a healthier meal out.

Choose a healthier restaurant – Try going to the places that advertise healthier menu choices. Some restaurants have special sections on their menus specifically for low calorie or low fat food choices. Don’t be afraid to speak up and request something off the menu.

Dressing on the side – Salads are healthy choices, but some places put too much dressing on their salads, which can cost you unnecessary calories and fat. Simply order the dressing to come on the side and you can control the amount that goes on to your salad.

Choose places that cook with olive oil – Most restaurants will cook with fattening butter, because it’s less expensive for them than healthier olive oil. Don’t be afraid to ask whether a restaurant uses butter or olive oil to cook with – and request that your meal be prepared without lard or butter.

Omit items – If you just have to have that juicy burger, consider ordering it without the cheese, bacon or mayonnaise (or even the bun)! Sometimes, omitting the cheese alone can save you as much as 25g of fat.

Avoid Buffets – The foods that you see in the buffets are ones the restaurants can easily make in bulk. These usually turn out to be fattening fried foods or pasta dishes. If you think you can easily steer clear of the fattening items and stick with healthier salads and foods, then go ahead and enjoy the buffet!

There’s nothing wrong with eating out once in awhile as long as you don’t overdo it. Don’t just watch what you order, but consider the size of the portions, too. Ask for a to go box right when your food comes and put half of the food in it for you to eat as leftovers the next day.

But to be honest with you – you will need a lot of will power to resist all the temptations from the menu especially when it comes to the dessert! Just tell the waiter at the beginning of your dinner or lunch by no means to ask you if you wish something for dessert! This is a small trick which makes it much easier for you to stick to your diet!
