There’s no question about it – home schooling has become a popular alternative to the public school system. But before you jump on the bandwagon, here’s some important home schooling information you should consider first.

1. It’s Your Creation

Some states have regulations about how many hours a day you must home school, and how many days a week. Overall, however, you have incredible flexibility in how you decide to set up your schedule. Some parents prefer to get all the schooling done in the morning, others in the afternoon. Primarily you want to create a learning environment that encourages your child to function at his or her best.

2. Taking Advantage of Your New Environment

Most of us grew up in a public school environment. If we struggled with a subject, too bad. There was a classroom full of other children who were ready to move on. And if we were fascinated by a subject, we had to wait for everyone else to catch up. That all changes in a home school environment.

If your child is struggling with a subject and needs more time with it, you have the freedom to slow down and give him or her that extra time. And if your child finds a particular subject of great interest, you have the freedom to foster that interest.

Take advantage of these opportunities. Move things around on the schedule if need be. Take more field trips if need be. Encourage your child’s fascination with learning more about the world.

3. The World Is Bigger Than The Classroom

One of the benefits of home schooling your child is creating a strong family bond. Look for learning opportunities outside of the house that involve other family members. A trip to the museum, for example. Or a family vacation that includes historical monuments and locations. Or a day with the grandparents, who share what it was like growing up in their time.

4. Encourage Creativity

Group think is expected in the public school system more than ever before. If you think differently than your teacher, you’re an outcast. If you draw outside the lines, you’re doing it wrong. If you find another way to arrive at the correct solution, you aren’t learning it right.

By our very nature, we’re creative beings. We learn by trying. Yes, we make mistakes. But we also make discoveries.

Allow your home schooled child to make his own mistakes and discoveries. Encourage them! They will prepare your child for adulthood better than a stack of textbooks from the floor to the ceiling.

There’s an abundance of considerations when you first begin to explore the idea of home schooling your child. These four home schooling information points are meant to introduce you to the bigger picture.

Having now started your homeschooling schedule, there are probably several questions which you are contemplating. These questions may include; should study and the calendar be continuous, do you take just a couple of breaks during the day, or have several quick breaks, how do you want to handle the public holidays, or what do you do about a long vacation or a couple of shorter ones?

One of the most attractive advantages of homeschooling also produces the solution to these problems and others like them; do that which best accommodates your child’s education and your family structure. It may seem like a lot of confusing decisions to make right now, but don’t worry about it. As you progress through your school year, you will get better at your schedule and what works best. There’s no need to decide on any hard and fast rules to the schedule right now. Just be pragmatic and go with what works best.

You are not required to take a fall break, or shut down for an extended summer vacation. Fact is, for some seasoned homeschoolers, a definitive curriculum is not essential as lessons are incorporated into daily life.

Prior to developing your calendar, give some serious thought to your comprehensive schedule, including such items as work and leisure schedules, and vacation arrangements.

For some families, short, one week vacations at various times of the year are preferred, while others like to have a more lengthy vacation all at one time.

There are several advantages to complying with the customary summer vacation schedule. The children may take advantage of the many summer pastimes, camps and courses and their schedules will mesh with that of their friends who attend regular school.

Following the normal summer recess further gives both parents and children time off from the daily routine. But this may have negative ramifications since at times it may be hard to return to the schedule at summer’s end.

Alternatively, there are benefits to be realized by planning several short breaks throughout the year. The children may avoid boredom by having the opportunity to pursue other activities from time to time.

Family outings and vacations can then be taken during less favored periods of travel to miss the crowds and realize lower costs.

Homeschooling is concerned with caring for the personal needs of the child as the most important focus and with that said, the family is in control.

So, structure the school year to accommodate the needs of both the child and the family and by so doing, take advantage of one of the best aspects of being a homeschooling family, which is flexibility.

When parents get together, record keeping is a subject that is often discussed in meetings and forums pertaining to homeschooling.

Some sort of record keeping while homeschooling is a legal requirement in most all of the states, and in addition, it chronicles important milestones in a child’s learning experience.

Record keeping is necessary for legal purposes, but it can also be a fun and exciting way to document the child’s progress while learning. Since a child’s education is a roadmap to their future successes as an adult it is important for the parent to keep some type of a log documenting the child’s achievements because without it, you’re just be hitting and missing with your child’s overall education.

A parent who belongs to a homeschool support group may already have access to forms for this purpose, but if not, the records can be kept in the form of a simple daily journal or a more high tech software program with all the bells and whistles. Regardless of the format, keeping track of work on a daily basis will keep the reporting manageable and efficient.

The parent can maintain a journal, keeping a log of what the child learned, or the competencies that have been achieved, and in fact, documenting memorable events throughout the year creates a wonderful keepsake used to reminisce down the road.

Daily planners outline the assignments in the parent’s planning notebook for a specified time frame. A good way of staying organized is to check off each task as it dealt with, and to maintain a separate area for recording any further notes and ideas. Educational trips, videos, and any special topics that were covered would be included in this section.

A portfolio consists of a collection of assorted materials that displays the child’s achievements during the course of study.

An effective means of charting the child’s progress is that of portfolio assessment, which takes a loose and somewhat rambling plan of homeschooling and translates it into an organized framework.

For example, a language portfolio might be comprised of essays, stories, reading charts, and spelling samples and the same can be outlined with progress in mathematics, history, science, and all other subjects.

A notable advantage of portfolio assessment is that it establishes a tangible journey of the child’s accomplishments and may encourage him to attain even greater achievements.

Record-keeping systems that outline a schedule or checklist can also be purchased. Either way, it is essential to keep records in one form or another.

Sometimes particular discipline problems may arise when the mother is also the teacher and the child remains at home during the day. It isn’t too hard for the child to come to feel that the homeschooling is just an extension of summer vacation and that the same freedoms apply.

One of the big advantages of homeschooling is that your child and you both have a lot of flexibility. However, it is necessary to make scheduling decisions early on in the homeschooling process despite its flexible nature.

Make a chart right at the start that outlines the daily activities, and adhere to it. You may initially have to work hard on scheduling, because you are probably accustomed to standard school timetables. You will have to consider the best interests of your whole family when you prepare your schedule.

Children should expect to do some of the course work without your help once the class work portion has been done; homework is very much a part of the homeschooling methodology.

The many lessons that children must learn in their formative years include politeness, punctuality and civility; these are varying aspects of discipline. You should be sure to teach your children how to behave acceptably and speaking appropriately, and you should be prepared to discipline them if they don’t adhere to these rules.

Often there is a specific room or area in a room that is reserved for the homeschool, and parents expect the children to be in this area at a certain time, appropriately dressed for school and with all their needed class materials.

If you don’t establish and enforce good ground rules at the very start, it can be difficult to ensure that homeschool isn’t regarded as an extended play time.

The success of homeschooling depends on being patient, both with your child and with yourself.

Sometimes the child loses focus and can’t listen to you properly; it is often good at this point to literally change the subject. Taking a moment to recharge during these times can reinvigorate both you and your child, allowing focus to be regained.

Initially the informal nature of homeschooling sometimes works against it due to the “hominess” of the learning environment, but with patience, focus, and hard work, you’ll soon get into a routine that best fits both your child and your family.

However, if you set up standards at the outset and follow through on them, you are much more likely to succeed with your homeschooling project.

You’ve made an important decision to home school your child and now you might be experiencing feelings of elation and nervousness all at the same. If so, don’t worry about it because you’re certainly not first, nor are you alone. Just always keep in mind that while there may be ups and downs, the incentives for home schooling outweigh the negatives.

Before you get started home schooling, you need to research your state’s regulations and laws. Each state has it’s own regulations and statutes. More than likely, you will need to retain a collection of your child’s work that shows his or her academic progress.

It’s very important to keep in mind that you don’t overlook or disregard existing legal standards and regulations in the state you will be home schooling.

An excellent resource for novice homeschoolers is to attend a home schooling support group. These support groups offer many advantages. Compatible individuals will help you combat condemnation and pessimism from those who don’t home school.

These support groups also offer encouragement and fun. Some groups go to zoos, museums, and even tour factories and local corporations. Homeschooling could cause your child to feel isolated; however, by attending a support group, your child may forge long-lasting friendships with other homeschoolers.

Home schooling requires intensive preparation. You will need to decide which courses will be part of the curriculum. Homeschooling techniques vary. There are numerous resources available to assist you in this preparation phase. One of the best places to receive homeschooling assistance and information is on the internet. Careful research will uncover these helpful nuggets.

Homeschooling is not for everyone; it requires self-motivation and diligence. Examine yourself to see if these necessary qualities exist in you. Your intentions and goals are the foundation on which your child’s instruction stands and will help determine his or her success.

Don’t overlook the necessity of keeping accurate and thorough records for your homeschooler. State record keeping regulations and laws vary for home schoolers, so it is vital that you research and comply with their regulations.

Homeschoolers are not locked into a long, boring day like students who attend traditional schools. When you home school, you can create a flexible schedule. Various fun activities can also be included in the course of the day.

Parents who provide a nurturing, and supportive environment will enable their homeschooler to achieve academic excellence. Their children will be eager to learn and will also benefit from meaningful individual time spent with them.

When you begin to homeschool you are most likely to find yourself surrounded by paper, stationery and books, the main essentials in homeschooling.

Being able to contain both is a must if you want to avoid the mess and clutter that comes with not having a manageable system in place. A system is one that will save you time, energy and money in replacing things you cannot find. Here are some ways that you can manage both.

Books:

Keep books that you are currently using at hand and within easy reach of where you will be working. Books that you know longer need or will need later can be ‘archived’ and stored away to make more room for the books you are using now.

It is a good idea to list all the books you are using at present making a note of the name, author and ISBN numbers. The numbers are especially useful should you need to replace, as publishers tend to change books from year to year.

You may also want to keep a log sheet or book of any books you borrow from the library. Make a note of the name, author and date of return.
When storing the books have a shelf dedicated for library books only so as not to confuse them with your own books.

Stationery:

You can store all your stationery like pens, pencils, crayons etc in tubs, pots, jam jars anything really. However one of the best ways to store your everyday stationery is to invest in a fishing tackle box or even a tool box. Find one that will accommodate all the items you require. You will find that the little compartments and the space underneath are great for storing things like crayons, glue, scissors, rulers, erasers etc. It is also neat and compact way to carry things around.

In addition to that you will find it wise to keep a list of all your homeschool supplies and make a note of any items that are running low so that you can reorder in good time.

Binders:
You may wish to keep a binder in which you can plan homeschool lessons, ideas and worksheet samples. Use a binder for your child’s portfolio with dividers to separate the different subjects or note books for each subject. Use colour code stickers for different subjects or to distinguish between the children’s stationery.

Art and crafts:

Usually transparent bins and boxes are suitable for materials like paper card and paints, but you can also use an old chest of drawers or a trunk; just make sure that they are clearly labeled. Look out for little chest of drawers or cabinets and use it to store loose and small left over items such as beads, buttons, and ribbons.

In addition to an interest in Home School, Ryan can show you How To Do Magic Tricks and Mentalism (like you see performed on TV).

Homeschooling is a term that applies to the educational instruction of children by their parents or guardians instead of in traditional schools.

The legal requirements for homeschooling and the laws that govern the process are established by the individual states.

You are probably aware of the fact that children begin the learning process long before they are old enough to attend public schools; they already know their colors, the names of different animals, and the alphabet when formal education begins.

The process of homeschooling simply takes it from there. Children do not attend the public schools; instead, their parents or legal guardians develop a curriculum and tailor each child’s education to suit his or her learning style and individual needs.

There are some key factors to take into consideration before opting for homeschooling.

It is a good idea to confer with people who have homeschooled their children to better understand what is involved and what the associated advantages and disadvantages are, as your personal objectives will greatly determine the success of your efforts.

There are costs involved with homeschooling that can range from a few hundred dollars per year to as much as a few thousand, so you need to find out what you can expect to pay.

Also, to be actively involved in homeschooling, you will probably become a family with one income, and this can be a hardship depending on your financial circumstances.

Teaching adds to and reinforces your personal education experience. There is a wealth of information available in books and other resources if you are considering homeschooling.

Educate yourself on the numerous homeschooling techniques, and select a method that will accommodate you and your youngster’s approach to learning effectively.

Each state in the union has laws that govern the process of homeschooling. You will be responsible for keeping records that document your child’s attendance, time of instruction, and the progress he or she is making on an annual basis.

There are many things about homeschooling that are appealing, including the inherent flexibility that doesn’t exist when a child is taught in a public school; however, it is more complicated than you may think.

It is very hard work to school a child at home and involves a great deal of responsibility. If you are successful, your child will have received a wonderful education that has been developed to address his or her individual needs, and it will create a lasting bond between you.

As our schools continue to graduate students who have poor reading skills, deplorable math scores, and little (if any) logic abilities, why do we wonder that young people are confused and lost.

Recently, during a question and answer forum at a university in Iowa, a student asked the speaker, “Why should we be expected to give coherent answers?” If you understand her question, you should be asking yourself, “Who wants to be given an incoherent answer to a question?” Yet this student fully believes it is fine to give an answer that does not follow the rules of logic.

How do we prevent our children from turning out like this young lady and a majority of the young people filling our colleges today? The answer is to teach them at home, where you are free do include logic in the curriculum.

Teaching your child at home is legal in all of the United States. Home schooled students score higher, on average, than the public school students. They tend to be better communicators, more mature, and do better in their college classes.

It is not hard to teach your own children. There are curriculum programs for every type of teacher, whether you want a program that leads you each step of the way or if you want lots of freedom in how to teach.

There are programs for families in every financial position. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of Internet sites that give free materials for learning to read, arithmetic, history, foreign languages, and science. Add some time each week for physical fitness and you will fulfill all the elementary school requirements for your state, more than likely.

Whether you buy educational products that cost a little or a lot, if you have a number of children you should look for products that allow you to use one book for any number of students. Some allow photocopying within the same family, while other products are good for an infinite number of students because they are non-consumable.

When your children reach high school, you will probably need to include a course in government (teaching the constitution is an excellent choice). Your state probably requires two years of math, two years of history, four years of language arts, and two years of a foreign language, besides the government course and physical education. But check with your state (they probably have a Website that gives the requirements).

All of these courses are readily available. Curriculum costs vary, but you can meet these requirements with very little money. Using your local library reduces the expense even more.

The school of today has a lot of problems. Teachers spend a lot of time controlling troublesome students, school campuses are dangerous, and the federal government has taken over what schools must teach. What our children are taught is no longer in the hands of the local school board or of the parents. It is no surprise that the schools are graduating young people who hate learning, who struggle to fit into the adult world, and who revert to violence.

Save your children by teaching them at home. Give them a teacher who loves them (yourself), and who knows best how they learn. There has never been such a great need to get our children out of public schools. We can give our children a top-notch education at home.

The criteria for choosing an online school are practically the same as other schools. Parents and students should be aware, though, that geography can be a factor in choosing a virtual high school. There are four types – private, public, chartered and university-sponsored – and some are available only for residents of certain areas. That aside, the following checklist is applicable for any distance learning institution:

Does the school offer or specialize in the program or courses that you are interested in? For example, you may want to study medical transcription in a school that specializes in medical courses. Also, check if you will be getting a diploma or just a certificate for your chosen program.

Is the school properly accredited? This ensures that you will not be wasting money, time and resources on a diploma that you can’t use later to pursue a higher education or advance your career. The accreditation should be by recognized by creditors and include oversight as well as a license to operate.

Cost: Similar to traditional learning institutions, the cost for attending an online school can vary, from the very expensive to the practically free charter schools. Aside from tuition, some charge additional fees on training materials, graduation and the like. Learn what your payment options are, and it doesn’t hurt to ask about discounts and scholarships, either.

Does the school allow transferring or earning of credits on courses? From the curriculum, see if there are equivalent courses that you have already taken in another institution, or have real-life work experience on. If the school allows crediting for these, you will be able skip these courses to reduce expenses and get your diploma faster.

Knowing how classes are conducted will also help in decision-making, since the process should fit the student’s learning style and schedule. Things like teacher-to-student ratio, learning format and support for struggling students should be considered. It also pays to ask about the qualifications of online teaching staff, as well as opportunities to attend a demo class.

Next, examine the school’s track record. The longer the school has been in business, the better. Aside from the number of students currently enrolled or the number of graduates, parents and students should also try to find out the quality of graduates the school has produced. For instance, how many students from the virtual high school went on to college? What is the drop-out rate?

Finally, parents and students can get additional feedback from current and past students and faculty. Other sources include online discussion boards and blogs on online schools. The important thing is to take time and exert effort to get to know several prospective schools before making a decision, instead of settling for the first school that seems to meet all the requirements.

Online schooling – this is one of the most popular forms of education in today’s generation. It is becoming a norm, since more and more have been enlisting in online schools. Online schools were first introduced to college level students and to those working for their master’s degree. Later, online schooling was introduced to high school and middle school students as well. In this article we will be focusing on online high school courses.

Studying in an online school, whether it be in the college level, high school, or middle school, has its advantages and disadvantages. It is the same as anything else. Studying online and enrolling in online high school courses can be very convenient, not just for high school students, but also to adults as well who do not have a high school diploma.

High school students benefit, because they can enroll in advanced courses, so they can graduate faster, or in remedial courses, so they can catch up to the required academic progress. Online high school courses are also wonderful options for undergraduate employees, because they can finish their high school education without having to sacrifice their present jobs.

Student employees will find online high school courses to be very helpful and convenient because of their flexibility and lenience especially with timetables and work schedules. They will allow you to study at the time that is most convenient to you. You will be allowed to study whenever you are free to do so.

Another advantage of studying online and enrolling in online high school courses is being able to work at your own pace, because the syllabus of each and every course and subject will be given to you at the beginning of each term. This will allow you to work at the designated pace, faster so you can graduate earlier, or at a slower pace so you can digest the lessons better. Having your syllabi will also allow you to do advanced reading on subjects and go back to previous lessons. Through online schools, you are able to make the most of your education and money.

Flexibility is not the only advantage of online high school courses. Another great thing about studying in an online school is that you have a vast and limitless pool of resources through the World Wide Web. Since your schooling is mostly done online via the internet, it is only reasonable that aside from your given modules and text material, you rely on internet sources as well.

Despite all these advantages, online schools have their disadvantages too. A lot of people would say that the major disadvantage of taking online high school courses is the lack of interaction. This is because unlike the customary classroom setting, you study alone, in front of a computer. Experts would say that interacting with an instructor and peers makes the quality of learning better. However, this may not be always true, since each individual has a different learning style.

Going back to school is never a bad idea, and now might be the right time for you. An online school can make this easier for you. Just remember that if you decide to enlist in online high school courses, that the school you choose is accredited by the right people, and that they will help you in every possible way to get your diploma.
