Starting a new course can be extremely exciting, but the first few weeks at a college can be very daunting, especially when you are trying to gather all of your appropriate materials and find your way around campus. During these first few weeks of school, you will probably have to run from store to store, trying to allocate the appropriate study materials, and this is why more and more people are opting to buy textbooks online; it allows them to order all of the items they need and have them delivered directly to their door. If you are in need of study materials, you might want to determine whether it is simply easier to buy textbooks online by taking all of the pros and cons of this option into account.

When you are attempting to buy textbooks online, you will need to start off by finding a reliable store that stocks a range of these items. By going through the wide variety of textbooks available, you should be able to locate the ones you need as quickly and easily as possible, add them to your cart, and pay for them within only a few minutes. These sites will usually have a search bar on hand, so that you can simply fill in the information concerning the name of the author, publisher’s details and the title of the book, and you will be taken to the page that displays the textbook itself.

If you cannot find the book that you are in need of, you can always ask the retailer if they will order it especially for you. Those that choose to buy textbooks online usually find it much easier to get everything they need and have it delivered directly to their door, because these retailers will take measures to ensure that their clients are happy with the service they receive. Land based retailers do not always have a wide selection of textbooks, and this means that you might have to order the book and return when it is in the store, which can be frustrating and time consuming.

By ordering and paying for everything online, you will simply need to sit back and wait for your books to be delivered directly to your door. Going through the trouble of searching land based stores for these items can make your life very difficult, and when you have just started your studies, you will want to make sure that this process is as simple as possible so that you can focus on fitting in and preparing to begin the school year, and you can get all this when you buy textbooks online.

Having and using a custom textbook can have a significant impact not only on the student using it, but also on the person who writes it. The custom textbook allows a person to choose content from a variety of publishers as well as add in original content.Content of course is the most important part of any type of media, because without good content, the communication that is needed simply cannot take place between the informant and the person who wants to be informed. A complete failure can ensue, simply because of a lack of good quality relevant content. This is why having a custom textbook is so important to all parties who are involved.

This is why most publishing companies are giving professors the opportunity to choose and use their own literary creations for their instruction time. They have the choice to modify their custom textbooks and sites, majorly by adding some chapters, choosing their own words and photos, and other options as well. The textbooks are then marked with a unique ISBM with a different custom title.

Apart from the content of custom textbooks, they also carry additional costs that most standard issue editions do not necessarily have. Usually the cost varies from one publisher to another. The standard cost that a professor is required to pay in order to add content varies from $1.50 to an additional cost of approximately 5% in each case. In general, each publisher deals with hundred or even thousands of changes in any given custom textbook.

After release, one of these unique publications can cost a student between$20 on upwards of $200 or more, depending on the value of publishing the content and the amount of ideas being added to the material.

Students are able to benefit a lot from this type of learning material, even though it will be required that they pay extra charges. For the additional costs, learners benefit by the standard textbooks along with information available in the customized textbooks. During class, you may find out that a personal touch is provided to the curriculum, as it includes information that is of good benefit to both the students and the community at large.

The other important thing about the custom textbooks is that they cover a lot of ideas about technology. Thus they are fluid. Usually what gives the professor a chance to discover and develop the latest technology is when he is able to add some content into his teaching materials, and in the process a custom textbook is produced.

After the agents, editors, and the marketing departments at publishing houses have all made their decisions about what will be published, in what quantities, and how the finished product will look, there is one final decision maker who ultimately decides what books will be presented for sale to consumers: The buyer for the bookstores. The decision maker for the independent bookstores is often the owner, or the owner and several employees. Make sure when you’re thinking about how to get a book published that your book title will be considered by bookstores.

The chains have corporate buyers who specialize in different areas. The buyer looks at the prior sales history of the author, or if it is the author’s first book, the buyer will look at similar titles or topics. Of course the publisher’s sales rep, or the distributor, lets the buyer know of the marketing push the title will receive.

If advance reading copies (ARCs) are available or galleys, the uncorrected page proofs of a book, those are sent to the chains and major independents three to four months prior to the title’s publication date.

Booksellers usually buy their first order of a new title from the publisher through their sales reps. Subsequent orders can be placed directly with the publisher, through a distributor or wholesaler, which allows the bookstore to batch their orders to several different publishers and receive one invoice and make only one payment. It allows the bookstore to return books from different publishers to one place, the wholesaler.

Even small and micro publishers need to work through the distributor and wholesalers. Occasionally local authors will be allowed to place their self published or print on demand book on the shelves of their local bookstore on a consignment basis. That means that the store only pays the author for the book when and if it sells.

Many titles that aren’t physically stocked in the store itself can often be ordered and sent to the customer’s home, as long as the book is prepaid.

The decisions book buyers make about what titles to stock are a blend of taking into account the sales pitches from publishers’ reps, historical sales data available about an author or a topic, knowledge of their customer base, and to a large extent simply what their gut instinct tells them will be popular.

Bookstore placement is a critical factor in how to get a book published successfully.

Finding popular kids books has gotten easier with the advent of kids only bookstores that only sell books for kids under 12 years of age. Parents will be happy that they can find appropriate child books in one place as well as find suggestions for new favorites.

Having a store that categorizes books by age helps parents find the right book that is appropriate to the childs age. If the book is too advanced for a child, the child will not understand it and lose interest. If the book is deemed to babyish by a pre teen, he wont read it. Having just the right amount of elements appropriate for each age group is important.

Some classic kids books are popular for generations. Examples would be Little Women, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Peter Pan, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. These types of books have interesting characters that do things that young readers can envision themselves doing. These help children learn to use their imagination at the same time they learn about how people lived long ago.

Popular baby books can help parents get young children ready to go to preschool or kindergarten. Children learn about colors, numbers, shapes and letters by the repetition these types of books encourage. Children learn about animals and people who might be different than the ones they experience in their day to day environment.

Some books explain special issues that are important for children to understand. Young children may need to learn about the adoption process, particularly if there is something unique about it such as parents and children being of different races. Children may like learning about a new sibling coming into the family and how it might impact them. They can also benefit from books that explain that some families have parents who are divorced but this does not mean the children did something wrong that caused it. There are childrens books that explain death, such as the death of a parent or grandparent in such a way that they can understand it.

Some parents will like to use age appropriate books to introduce their child to culture or religion. Many books have stories about different cultures with stories about how people in other lands live and work. Some books have variations of Bible stories or prayers in a format that children can easily understand.
Parents, grandparents and others who want to give a birthday or holiday gift can now find interesting books to give in one place. Popular kids books are easy to find using a specialty bookstore just for children.

Its now possible to find popular kids books online in a central place. Allowing kids to choose their own reading material encourages them to read. Reading well usually means schoolwork is easier which can mean better grades. Being able to find books in one place makes gift giving easy for grandparents, aunts and uncles and godparents.

Classic kids books are those that endure and are popular over generations. For more than one hundred years, children have enjoyed books like Black Beauty by Anna Sewell that has sold more than fifty million copies. This story of a horse in 19th century England promises to be a favorite for years to come. Alices Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll is another classic that has been a favorite for decades as well. One of the first, if not the first, fantasy stories for children, it has a plot full of twists and turns and keeps young readers interest all the way through.

Popular kids chapter books include The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Tom Sawyer. Children are many times intrigued by reading books from times past as it opens their eye to how people lived. They learn about how things they may take for granted now did not exist in the past and how people lived without them.

Sometimes, children find a particular author they like. Mercer Mayer and Dr. Seuss have written some of the most popular kids books for younger children. Dr. Seuss has been popular for more than fifty years and many children learned to read with his books.

There are also books that address and explain issues of interest to younger children. Books about adoption may help explain this process to children and help them understand it is a positive process that helps make families. Children can learn more about how people may look different or act differently and its ok. Kids books can introduce them to other cultures, history and religion. While young children may not necessarily know much about the world outside their immediate sphere, reading to them about others can help prepare them to experience the world in a positive way.

Finding a site that specializes in popular kids books makes shopping for bookworms easy. In addition to classic and modern novels, there are fascinating books on history and science. If a child is interested in dinosaurs, rockets and space, animals or other subjects, finding a suitable book is easy.
The old saying, Books are our friends has rung true for many. Most adults can state which books they loved as children. Popular kids books are a great resource for learning and pleasure.

The early pulp fiction magazines and books were created on cheap pulp paper as an inexpensive source of entertainment for people who wanted to escape from the daily rigors of life. People were trying to make the best of living through the depression and the inexpensive entertainment value of these magazines fit the bill perfectly. The intention of the editors was to have the customer pick up the latest copy of his favorite mystery magazine, read it on the bus or train, shove it in his pocket and either share it with friends and family or throw it away when he was done with it.

Although the genre had its roots in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome in the form of stories told with riddles, the first true mystery novel, “The Woman in White” written by Wilkie Collin, was published in 1860. His novel was the first of its kind to have several characters take turns narrating the story. This allowed for many different view points of the same incident create the mystery and keep the reader wondering where the story would go from there.

The 1920s gave rise to great mystery writers such as Edward Stratemeyer, who wrote the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mystery stories, (under the pen names Franklin W. Dixon and Carolyn Keene respectively). Agatha Christie, one of the great mystery writers, emerged in the 1920s and delighted audiences with many mysterious whodunits.

By the 1930s, the mystery, hard boiled crime detective, thriller and suspense fiction, was firmly entrenched as a popular genre and kept readers demanding more stories. The pulps were a fantastic outlet for great writers to churn out exciting, pulse pounding stories that kept you guessing to the very end. Writers such as Dashiell Hammett’s, “The Maltese Falcon”, Raymond Chandler’s “Fair Well my Lovely” and L. Ron Hubbard’s “Dead Men Kill,” were prime examples of pulp fiction writers that developed a following fan base that continues to this day.

The 1940s was the great radio era where families gathered after dinner and enjoyed the live performances. The 1950s gave way to television and the pulps declined dramatically as people became fascinated with the visual stories that only TV could produce at that time. The pulps did however, give producers much of the material it needed and famous characters such as Ellery Queen and Perry Mason were pulp based characters that that came to life on the small screen.

Although the pulps virtually disappeared after the advent of TV, there is a revival of the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction in the form of e-books, audio books and reprinted novels. Revisiting these classic stories can give one an appreciation of the writers who could create mysterious characters, baffling situations that elude understanding and along the way you may just recognize some old friends.

Frederick Hail is a passionate advocate of lifelong learning through audio books on cd collections. Galaxy Press Publishing, publisher of “The Golden Age Stories” and all genres of pulp fiction stories and novels, offers a convenient subscription service, so you never have to miss an issue. It’s a pulp fiction lover’s dream!

The word carnival is derived from the Italian word, carnevale, and literally means the absence of meat. Carnivals have become synonymous with merrymaking and wild festivities just before Lent. The traveling carnival had become a popular and inexpensive attraction during the Depression era when a family’s every penny was valuable. Just walking a carnival’s midway, the carnival’s central concession area – offered a variety of sights and sounds that titillated, amused and even frightened the casual pedestrian.

A carnival’s exhibitions were as varied as the people that strolled down the midway marveling at the rides, games of chance, exhibits and sideshows. Specialty acts included tattooed performers, bearded women, freak shows, strongman acts, a sword swallower and weird animal attractions such as two-headed cats or five-legged ponies. Such entertainment was affordable during the economically challenging times and during its heyday, millions of Americans partook of a carnival’s colorful amusements.

It was only natural then that one of America’s rising pulp fiction stars would set his sights on the carnival as the location for one of his hard-boiled and spectacular stories.
Originally published in the November 1934 issue of Popular Detective magazine, future’ New York Times bestselling author L. Ron Hubbard’s The Carnival of Death is pulp fiction at its best. Exciting, daring, fast-paced and populated with memorable characters, The Carnival of Death was exactly the thrill ride that patrons of carnivals and pulp readers demanded.

In The Carnival of Death US narcotics agent Bob Clark is working undercover at
Shreve’s Mammoth Carnival when he encounters a headless body. Clark suddenly finds himself in deadly peril after four tribal headhunters working for the show disappear.
Gruesome murders, a gunfight in the House of Horror, fistfights and a layer of multiple mysteries all add up to more thrills than a barker’s promise.

The carnival barker was someone that stood at the forefront and “barked” colorful descriptions of the sights and sounds that awaited those who dared venture along the carnival’s midway. For the first time in over seventy years, pulp fiction fans can follow U.S. narcotics agent Bob Clark past the barker and into an exciting whirlpool of adventure. Told in eight breathtaking chapters, The Carnival of Death is a taut, suspenseful tale. Before the first chapter ends Bob Clark discovers a headless corpse, gets attacked by an unknown assailant wielding a blackjack, and races headlong into a mystery that will tax his energies as the headless bodies begin to pile up around him.

The Golden Age of pulp fiction stories is currently experiencing a rebirth of interest from an entirely new generation of readers. These action-packed stories have a unique flavor with prose that crackles with imagery in all the genres printed in the 1930s, 40s and 50s many of which were the backdrop for many movies and television series. “The Carnival of Death” is only one of the many classic books to be enjoyed by anyone who just wants a good read!

Two years later French balloonist Jean Pierre Blanchard flew over the English Channel. It was a stunning feat of bravery, but more than that, it opened up the sky as a new frontier for mankind. Not long after, the Wright brothers made history and like a freight train barreling down at breakneck speed; flight not only became a reality, but made the entire world accessible for all at speeds hitherto unknown.

It was fodder for fiction writers such as Jules Verne. His novel, “Around the World in Eighty Days” published in 1873, became almost an instant classic. His ability to excite the reader with the danger, beauty and novelty of flight was something readers had never fully envisioned before and gave the reader a view of seeing the earth below them rather than the view above. He was considered by some a “scientific seer” due to his fairly accurate predictions about space flight, helicopters, radar, satellites, cannons, tazers, skyscrapers and gas powered automobiles. Several of his novels were picked up by Hollywood and turned into successful movies.

By the early 1900s, the “pulps” (so called because they were printed on cheap high-acid-content paper) were churning out aviation adventure stories. Of particular interest were the WWII air combat adventures. America was battling its way out of the depression and was eagerly gobbling up stories of dare devil ace pilots, dog fights and daring-do.

The pulp fiction magazines were a perfect outlet for aviation and air adventure stories. Many great writers jump started their careers such as Dashiell Hammett, Ray Chandler, Lester Dent and H.P Lovecraft and many more in a wide variety of genres, contributed literary works that inspired and influenced many up and coming writers.

L. Ron Hubbard, a pioneer of the golden age of pulp fiction was one such writer to influence future writers with his novels, “Sabotage in the Sky and Sky Crashers.” Readers were enthralled by barnstorming dare devils, intrigue, pulse-pounding aerial combat and even romance. These were two of Hubbard’s thirteen air adventure novels published between the 1930s and 40s in pulp magazines such as, “Five Novels, War Birds and Top-Notch.”

Being a pilot himself and experiences in the Navy, he was able to create realism in his characters, land, air and sea scapes. In writing adventure stories he was quoted as having said: “In writing an adventure story a writer has to know that he is adventuring for a lot of people who cannot. The writer has to take them here and there about the globe and show them excitement and love and realism. As long as that writer is living the part of an adventurer when he is hammering the keys, he is succeeding with his story.”

Mans longing to fly like birds is a freedom we have the opportunity to experience because of the ingenuity of people like the Wright brothers and our favorite writers of air adventures. If you want to experience the excitement and the adventure of flight, read a good book! Enjoy!

Symbolized by Au (from the Latin aurum, or shining dawn) and number 79 on the periodic table of elements, gold is the one metal along with silver that is identified with money and wealth. Gold is used as coinage and is the standard for many monetary systems. Gold fever has stricken many a prospector and in the vast reaches of the American West gold prospecting is a way of life.

Arizona has the largest concentration of gold seekers with its rich topography that both entices the prospectors while discouraging them with its often treacherous terrain. This rugged landscape, rife with desert and dry creek beds that can easily flood during one of the southwest’s rare but violent thunderstorms, is also the pulp writer’s domain.

In L. Ron Hubbard’s classic, Devil’s Manhunt, twenty-three year old Tim Beckdolt has struck paydirt. After a month of grueling work he can boast a haul of $175,000 in gold ore. All he has to do is survive, for there in the shadow of the aptly named Desperation Peak young Tim Beckdolt is about to be ambushed. Not only his fortune but his life hangs in the balance.

While Devil’s Manhunt makes for riveting fiction, the background behind the story is historically accurate. Cochise County alone is among the highest producers of gold. From 1879 through modern times, Cochise County mining companies and individuals have unearthed more than three million ounces of gold. Gold prospecting remains so popular that today several Arizona companies offer vacation packages for travelers looking for that unique get-away experience. Prospecting for gold while on a week’s vacation is exactly what thousands of people do each year.

A prospector’s tools are vital to his success. For Tim Beckdolt, who had discovered an ancient creek bed sparkling with gold, the sluice box was his preferred tool. A sluice box was usually made of long narrow wood and when placed in a creek bed could be used to separate the heavier gold deposits from the detritus and silt that normally flows downstream. The heavier gold particles would catch along the bottom boards, called riffles, where a prospector could easily retrieve them after sifting through the dirt.

Westerns were an integral part of the pulp fiction industry. During its heyday the westerns were mass produced by the hundreds on a monthly basis. Famous Westerns (where Devil’s Manhunt first appeared in 1950), Western Story, All Western, Western Aces, and Five-Novels Monthly are just some of the magazines that featured blazing western fiction. Devil’s Manhunt is the sixth of Hubbard’s westerns to be released by Galaxy Press.

Devil’s Manhunt is a short but incredibly fast-paced action yarn. Hubbard’s deft characterizations bring his characters vividly to life. Beckdolt is faced with both human adversaries and the unforgiving landscape where he is forced to survive against impossible odds. Included in Devil’s Manhunt is an example of superb western American fiction.

Are your books all well read and you are in need of a new reading challenge? Perhaps it is time to start looking for your books shopping online? But before you do perhaps you should try to sell your second hand books to cover the costs of your new book purchases? Perhaps you will not need to buy new books at all? There are many different ways you can shop for books and sell your second hand books.

First make sure that you get all the books together, detail the title and the author and perhaps a short description about the book itself. Do not forget all those technical books or old course books, these can also be sold. Shopping for new books can be expensive so there are many people who are happy to buy second hand books and if you have them for sale why not sell them!

When you are sorting through your books make sure they are in good condition. Selling books that are torn or have loose pages will be very difficult if not impossible and if you do not advise the buyers, especially with online purchasers, where they can not see the books before hand, you will find that you will have no end of problems. There will be books returned to you and you will be responsible for a lot of postage and handling charges and could in effect loose money so the old and tatty books that are un-repairable or not worth repairing should be discarded.

Try to group your books in to categories, and be aware that popular books will be much harder to sell for reasonable prices. The reason for this is that there will already be so many of them available online that your books if they are all popular titles will probably be ignored, unless of course you sell them for next to nothing. Again, with online sales be wary of the costs for delivery as you want to make sure that you earn more than it costs you to send the items.

If you start to sell your books and find that you are making reasonable income from doing so then perhaps you should not stop there? There are other places you yourself could purchase books, especially category specific books which will sell for higher costs. Try garage sales, charity shops, libraries or gather books from your friends and family. When you have a store of books start your online campaign again and you may find you have a second career out of it all.

There are places online to sell your books like eBay or Amazon as well as many others. Most of these sites you can register for free or a very small amount, setting up your items for sale is generally a very simple process. Make sure that you are giving good descriptions of the books you are selling and again that they are in good condition.

You will be rated in most of these online shopping facilities and the higher the rating from your customers the more likely that others will wish to purchase from you. If you have bad ratings due to selling inferior books then it is likely others will ignore your books even if the prices are lower than other offers.

So before you start shopping for books yourself, sell off the second hand books that you have. You may even find that some of the books you have you want to read again so be picky with what you sell and as stated above, you can always get more books from various different places at nice low costs and on sell these as well when you are finished with them.

You can also check out your own local second hand book store, if you can find one, and perhaps trade your books to them. Usually this way there is less likely that you will profit but you will get what you wanted – a whole lot of new books to read.
