Writing a book review primarily means writing a critical summary of the book, by personally analyzing the contents of the book and ultimately forming an opinion of the work of the writer. Thus, a book review is actually a critical evaluation of the book, which is not only informative, but also useful for readers who intend to read the book.

A book review is written after thoroughly reading and comprehending the basic contents of the book, so that the author’s task extends beyond simply writing a summary of the book, by undertaking the responsibility to critique the ideas presented in the book, as lucidly and honestly as possible. While writing a book review is a comprehensive process, it involves three basic steps including, title, introduction, description and summary, which form the chief sections of the review followed by a critical analysis of the book.

Title: This section includes the name of the book, name of the author, publishing company and date and finally the number of pages. For instance a title in APA citation style would be: David Waltner-Toews (2008) Food, Sex and Salmonella: Why Our Food is Making Us Sick. Vancouver: Greystone Books, 256 pages.

Introduction: This is the first step in writing a book and introduces the topic and subject of the book to the reader. It also includes essential details such as the kind of literature presented in the book whether sociological, historical, academic or general. This section is could also comprise of any other information about the writer which could place the text and contents in a special perspective.

An introduction to the above mentioned book could possibly begin as follows:

In Canada, food is very cheap with only ten percent of the total income being spent for shopping for food items, nearly half of what was being shelled out nearly four decades ago. However, with the cut in prices, there has also been an apparent decline in the quality of foods available at Canada’s grocery stores, resulting in the deaths of several individuals which were believed to have been caused by the Listeria bacteria traced in the cutting machines of a meat processing factory. The meat packaged at the factory was consumed mainly by senior people and those in hospitals, where ready-made food is mainly brought in rather than being prepared.

Short Description and synopsis: This is the main section of the book review and includes a comprehensive and clear description of the book which helps in providing important insight to the prospective reader. Additionally, quotes from the book can be included in this section to provide important information about the work. One thing that needs to be remembered though is that the entire storyline of the book is not revealed, most importantly, the suspense of the book, since this would practically kill the reader’s interest. For instance:

David Waltner-Toews is a veterinarian and epidemiologist, has revised and polished the first edition of his book and provided the audience with an edition which enables us to comprehend the existing and serious problems present in the foods we consume. Waltner-Toews compels us to think beyond the “normal” science in order to understand the “political and economic arrangement” which have a crucial impact on “food borne diseases” and infections which occur due to preservatives, parasites, metals, toxins and other harmful substances which affect the food while it is being processed and packaged for consumption…

Critique or critical analysis: This section engages in a critical analysis or critique of the book, by taking on examples which are impactful and important. The section also presents the reader with a personal opinion regarding the worth of the book and the crucial message which is conveyed by the author. A critique is also a summation of the book review which could be concluded in the following manner:

In his book, Waltner-Toews asserts the fundamental point that reforms and solutions should be responsible, sensible and empathetic in addition to being reasonable and fair. Incidents which are casued due to contaminated food should be used as a means to realise that abuse and injustice in the ‘banana republics’ should be checked as a permanent solution rather than simply creating temporary means of correction like increasing food inspections on the borders of Canada. Using distinct cases and examples, Waltner-Toews startles the reader, educating and informing about the manner in which diseases and illnesses related to foods, occur in people.

He proposes that “we sit down and listen to each other” so that “appropriate models for resolving food problems” other than “farm to fork technologies” can be created. The book ends with the golden rule “wash your hands…Eat on.”

Sincerely recommend a worthwhile book – Nicholas D.Kristof Sheryl WuDunn’s Half the Sky. Most popular books in Top books

When you are looking for a specific book for purchase online on websites, you might run into a small problem if you don’t have all of the information you need. If you only know part of the title or the author’s first name, for example, you will probably have a hard time searching for that particular book on any online bookstore. Finding the book you want will be a long and arduous process if you do not have the correct information.

An important thing for you to know when looking for specific book titles for purchase is the EAN number of the book. The EAN is a number identifies the book. Every book has got a unique EAN number. This number is documented with all of the other important information for each book, such as the author’s name and the full title. Having this number will make it much easier to search for your book online.
The website www.amazon.com has a wonderful search engine that can help you to find information about any book you may be looking for. When looking for specific book titles for purchase, you can go to this website and enter a variety of keywords into their search engine. Once you have done this, you will get a list of books that relate to the keywords you have entered. This will increase your chances of finding your book quickly and easily. Once you have found it, you should always find the EAN and save it for future use. If you not able to purchase the book from Amazon.com, then by using the EAN number that you have found, you can search for the book that you want easily in any other website.

There are a wide variety of books available for online purchase. Paperback books are more portable versions of the hardcover books that we all love. The hardcover books are generally a little more expensive than the paperback version, but they are cheaper to purchase online than in a bookstore. Paperbacks come in two versions, the mass market paperback and the trade paperback. The main difference in the two is the quality of the paper and binding, which causes a difference in price. Mass market paperbacks tend to be cheaper then the trade paperbacks.

When looking for specific book titles for purchase online, remember that having the entire title, the full name of the author, or having the EAN can increase your probability of finding the book easily and quickly. To help you in your search you can visit www.amazon.com and use their detailed search engine. The different types of books available can vary widely. You must pick the type that is right for you.

Searching for a good reputable online store is the first step of your online store experience. You should feel free to browse and compare stores in terms of pricing, trustworthiness and convenience.

The other day I was casually looking at some works in my favorite gallery in Tel Aviv and the owner came over to me and handed me what he called a “must read.” He handed me, “The $12 Million Dollar Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art” as a gift.

After the first page I was hooked. It was a thriller. It took me into the world where the business of art and the art of business are so intertwined they can’t be separated. Quickly you understand that successful artists are talented actors, street wise politicians, and keen business people who understand the essence of the sale and branding.

Art’s beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but Don Thompson makes you soon realize that there’s a lot more involved when people they are considering investing millions of dollars for, say,…a stuffed shark. Don Thompson understands that in order to sell a porcelain pink panther or a platinum diamond skull with human teeth you better get the branding just right. Don Thompson’s understands 21st century marketing.

Don Thompson takes us into a world of Tracy Emin, Francis Bacon, Jeff Koons Damien Hirst, Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Gagosian, Saatchi, White Cube and Frieze–a world in which so many strive to achieve that even making an effort to join it’s population is highly irrational. A world of auction psychology, the auctioneer’s hammer, and processes often dictated by hearsay, fluff, and gossip. If you ever thought that the primary guide to business success laid in psychology or social psychology–this book is a must read.

WI Thomas, a famous sociologist, once said, “If men define a situation as real than it’s real,..they are real in their consequences.” Don Thompson, in his volume, empirically proves the substance of this statement in the world of art. He’s written a gem.

Indeed, when I get back to NYC and visit the local galleries–I’ll think of this book constantly. For me it unified my cynicism about the marketing of art with my passion for the collection of contemporary art.

Since the book is concerned with the principles of economies, social psychology, and is well-researched I am going to make to required reading in my Fall Cornell class on Organizational behavior and Uncertainty. For the last few years I’ve been taking my NYC interns to the MOMA and trying to impress on them that the art world is sometimes an interesting venue for business lessons. Don Thompson makes these efforts more interesting, more coherent, and more to the point. I think my fall semester will be enriched by his book. Academia, set aside this book is a superb two night thriller.

The book is for anyone who’s interested in rationally, irrationally, and the world’s of fads, trends, brands, and idiosyncrasies.

Unless there is a huge technological advancement in the science of robotics, and machines suddenly become capable of doing human tasks, then human resource management will always be an important focus in most businesses. Especially with those that provide valued services, it is usually the case that human beings are in charge of these operations. Such is the case for emergency cleaning service. These kinds of business and their operations rely almost completely on human skill and activity. The problem with human beings is that we are all prone to error and unable to consistently deliver the same results over and over again unlike programmable machines. This means that the performance of a service job is directly correlated to the focus, attitude and physical stature of the worker. Each of those elements can easily change from day to day which can make human beings a liability to cleaning services.

This is where human resource management comes in. It is the study of the behavior of employees and attending and managing it so that performance may be maximized. For emergency cleaning service, imagine having to send a grumpy service worker who is not happy with what he is doing. He will most probably not be focused on his work and will display sub par performance. Consequently, the customer will complain and the perceived value of the service you provide will decrease. This results in a loss of possible future profits or sales. As you can see, it is important to be able to manage your human resources as they are a vital component of your service.

There are many different concepts and behavioral studies that have been conducted and applying some of them to your situation at hand can greatly improve the performance of your employees. There are many books out there that have detailed explanations on human resource management. The book, Organizational Behavior by Stephen Robbins can get you started in created your own human resource management programs. It also gives examples of the different scenarios that the concepts can be used in. Another book is Human Resource Management by Robert Mathis. Both these books provide motivation and decision making concepts that can be applied to your emergency cleaning service.

Remember that incompetency can be addressed; you just need to look at the right direction to get some answers. Educate yourself and unlock the secrets of creating a highly efficient human workforce for your cleaning service.

There are many ways of going about your own emergency cleaning service. There are many instructors, books and guides that will feed you information on the best ways that you can operate your business. One aspect that will surely come up is how you manage the actual operations of your work. Cleaning is the main service you provide so applying different concepts and theories that have been tried and tested by many other companies and managers may gibe you a more competitive edge.

The advantages of operations management is that its concepts aim to give you emergency cleaning service more efficiency. Also, it does not restrict you to a set of alternatives and forces you to adapt the ideas to fit your standards and your line of work. You can look at operation management concepts as the foundation that you can build upon to eventually create the best and most efficient service you can possibly manage.

The book that I will be basing these concepts on is one that it frequently used in operations management classes around the world and provides up to date information on the latest developments in this field of study. The book is entitled An Introduction To Operation Management by Jay Heizer and Brendan Render.

The book is very comprehensive and covers a vast array of topics that will get you up to speed on the most contemporary ways of running your service. At the same time, the topics are also done in chronological order, assuming you are just about to start up your business.

It begins with the essentials of managing projects or any other business related venture. It then moves towards being able to forecast the profitability and the supposed success of your emergency cleaning service. If all goes well until that point, the next chapters of the book explain, in detail, the many things that you should take into account. Inventory management practices, quality testing methods, process strategies, facilities management and many more will be illustrated and talked about in the book. For each aspect of your service, from the raw materials all the way to the personnel, there are concepts and ideas that promote efficiency, coordination and organization within your system.

The book may be intimidating at first but that is only because its scope is extremely broad. In reality, you will greatly benefit from what you can learn from it so take some time to read through it and absorb all that you can for the betterment of your business.

Richard Barthallo reports on issues affecting homeowners for Emergency Cleaning Service Detroit and Emergency Cleaning Service Warren

Last year fantasy books, in particular, urban and young adult fantasy, dominated the best seller lists. Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books topped the NY Times Best Seller’s list for several weeks, as did Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Mystery books. Both series were catapulted from being read by loyal urban fantasy fans to worldwide exposure due to wide and small screen projects. The Twilight movie grossed $70.5 million dollars in North American box-office receipts during its opening weekend. This gave it the distinction of being the 4th highest November grossing film of all time.

This past summer Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Mystery books were made into a new HBO series titled True Blood. Although the first few episodes drew moderate audience interest it quickly grew due in part to a massive online social networking campaign by HBO. The show quickly became the network’s most popular series since The Sopranos and Sex and the City according to Associated Press reports. The viewing audience averaged 6.8 million per week, evidenced by the social networking activity surrounding the show. Fans flocked to the HBO True Blood Wiki site in droves. HBO even produced a commercial highlighting some of the comments left at the site by fans. The Internet was buzzing with conversations about this season’s cliffhanger and message boards are still active even though the season is over. Anna Paquin’s recent Golden Globe win in the Best Actress series for her portrayal of Sookie Stackhouse will likely re-energize fans.

All of this culminated in record sales for fantasy book titles. Of the Top 30 Best Selling Books in 2008 (based on USA Today data), 3 books fall under the mystery genre, 4 are general fiction, 5 are romance books, 8 fall into the non-fiction category, and 10 books on the list are fantasy books. All but two of the fantasy books on the list are part of a series:

#1: New Moon by Stephenie Meyer
#2: Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer
#3: Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer
#4: Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
#7: Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling
#8: Murder Game by Christine Feehan
#18: The Host by Stephenie Meyer
#22: The Pagan Stone by Nora Roberts
#29: Watchmen by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons
#30: Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

Stephenie Meyer and Charlaine Harris titles have high rankings on best seller lists published by the NY Times, Barnes and Nobles, and Amazon.com. This trend will likely continue in 2009 as filming of the second Twilight movie (titled New Moon) and True Blood Season 2 get underway.

For more information on last year’s best selling fantasy books see the article titled Best Fantasy Books for 2008 which provides a comprehensive listing of best selling fantasy books categorized by genre.

Anyone who’s ever gone on a tour of the old plantation homes in Louisiana understands why there is such an abundance of literary resources on the subject. A plethora of coffee table pictorials on the topic exist that feature pages and pages of glossy full-page portraits of the Old South’s former glory, embodied in architecture.

There are also resources on the history of the state’s plantation houses, though there are noticeably less of these. These homes are deeply rooted in American history, for better or worse, and they represent many things to many people. In Louisiana it is typical for tourists to go on tours that stop at many of these homes, and looking at them one can see how it would be easy to spend a day rubber necking past such splendor.

One such coffee table excursion is Louisiana Plantation Homes: A Return to Splendor by Lee Malone (with photographs by Paul Malone). The book romanticizes the South, much as one would expect from a coffee table pictorial resource, but after perusing the vibrant photos of the restored past glories of Louisiana, it is easy to understand why. It is typical in Southern literature to reminisce of days gone by, over a period lost forever and all of that – but what stands out about this particular resource is the accompanying history and architectural details given for each historical home. The architecture involved in Louisiana’s plantation homes is varied almost to the point to be overwhelming: the book features resources of Colonial, Italianate, Victorian Gothic, and Southern Classical architecture. It wasn’t uncommon for plantation owners to combine two or more architectural modes.

One of the book’s features is the site of scenes from Interview with a Vampire, the Destrehan Plantation. This particular house’s claim to fame is being the oldest documented plantation home on the lower Mississippi River Valley (having been established in 1781). Its columns and wrap-around second level balcony are so emulated that the construction has almost become a Southern clichE. The home features the Jefferson Room, within whose climate-controlled walls a document signed by Thomas Jefferson is displayed. The document designated four men (one of them former house resident Jean Noel Destrehan) to be the Orleans Territorial Council. It is the only original document in the room, though the room is a Mecca of resources for other Louisiana state documents.

The book is also a resource on the gem of plantations, the Oak Alley Plantation. “The Grande Dame of the Great River Road” features a quarter-mile canopy of 300-year-old giant live oak which forms a long tunnel leading up to the Greek-style architecture of the mansion. The property is not only part of Louisiana tours, but also hosts a variety of social gatherings, including champagne brunches, and arts and crafts fairs. The grounds are home to private cottages, which are part of the former plantation’s new bed and breakfast, and weddings and like private events are also hosted on the grounds. The restoration of the home was complete in 1925.

Getting in TTouch With Your Dog by Linda Tellington-Jones is one of several books on how to use these very small, light movements to address a variety of health and behavioral problems in dogs, cats and horses.

TTouch is a bodywork technique that was invented and developed by Linda Tellington-Jones in the 1980s. She initially developed it for use on horses, but soon started using the technique on wild animals and pets as well, and eventually also on humans. Over the years, Tellington-Jones has been asked to work on all kinds of animals in a variety of settings, such as wildlife rehabilitation centers and zoos. Some of my favorite success stories include how she used TTouch to help a monkey overcome emotional trauma after it had been used for psychological research; worked on the orca who starred in “Free Willy” to increase his confidence; and helped a young leopard at a zoo break out of obsessive habits.

TTouch is not massage; it works on a cellular level. Scientists have found that the small circular movement of the TTouch stimulates four different brainwaves at the same time, creating the ideal functioning mode of the brain. When using these small movements, you help the cells awaken, thereby speeding up the process of healing, learning and changing. It can help calm aggression and fear. It can help an animal overcome shyness, nervousness and car sickness as well as bad habits such as jumping, leash pulling and excessive barking. In humans, conditions such as chronic pain, migraines, anxiety and depression have been treated successfully.

One of the many wonderful things about this technique is that you don’t have to know anything about anatomy to be able to use it successfully. Anybody can learn the basics in a just a few hours, and this book is a great source if you want to give it a try. Each movement is thoroughly described and illustrated with photos. There are also many case studies, and a list of health issues and behavioral problems and the TTouches you can use for each.

I use the technique on my dog in stressful situations such as during thunderstorms, or when going to the vet, and I can tell you that it makes a huge difference. Whenever I try using it on myself, just doing a few basic TTouch circles on my leg, I get an immediate feeling of calm and happiness. Contentment even. Give it a try, on yourself, other family members, or on your pets. I think you’ll be amazed at the impact these small movements can have.

Whether you’re a dog owner, work with dogs, or just enjoy spending time with them (maybe you’re volunteering at your local shelter or dog sit for traveling friends), these books are must-reads. They will, in various ways, help you understand dogs (and other animals) better, by teaching you how they think, move, and why they behave the way they do. Even the tiniest gesture means something when it comes to dogs, and by paying closer attention to your own reactions and gestures, you can improve your communication and relationship with the dogs in your life.

In my opinion, understanding and being able to read dogs’ body language is invaluable to anyone spending time with them. You can put that knowledge to good use every day, for everything from initiating play to stopping an accident before it happens. The two books that I refer to again and again in regards to this are The Other End Of The Leash by Patricia McConnell and On Talking Terms With Dogs by Turid Rugaas.

The Other End Of The Leash
By Patricia McConnell
Patricia McConnell is a well-known animal behaviorist and professor in Zoology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she teaches The Biology and Philosophy of Human/Animal Relationships. She has spent many years studying canine behavior, is a sought-after speaker who has held (and continues to hold) seminars all over the world, has her own radio show, “Calling All Pets”, and has written several books and booklets. My favorite is the captivating The Other End of The Leash, in which she explores and explains the human-dog relationship and how your body language plays a big part in it. As an example, you might not even notice the tiny movement you automatically make with your hand when asking your dog to sit, but to your dog, that’s the clue, not necessarily the word “sit”. There are many similar examples in the book, and you will find yourself being much more aware of how you move after reading it. McConnell is a wonderful writer who really brings the many stories and case studies in the book to life. Her low-key humor will make you smile, some of the stories will bring tears to your eyes, you’ll nod in recognition when she talks about certain behaviors, and in the end, you’ll have a much better understanding of why your dog does certain things, and how you can help him or her be a better behaved and happier dog.

On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals
By Turid Rugaas
Turid Rugaas is a Norwegian dog trainer who has gained international recognition for her groundbreaking research in canid communication. This easy read talks about canid body language, and how dogs (and wolves) almost always try to stop a fight or conflict before it begins by sending “calming signals” to each other (and to us humans as well). On Talking Terms… teaches you how you can adapt your own body language and how to use the calming signals when communicating with dogs. Notice how two dogs rarely approach each other head on. One of them usually makes a little circle to the side before coming over to say hello. This move tells the other dog that the first is friendly and means no harm – an easy method you can use as well when saying hello to an unknown dog. The “yawning technique” is another excellent example, and one that I use often to help dogs calm down and relax.

These two books are a great beginning for those who want to better understand dogs. And very entertaining reads to boot.

At last, the mystery of how to pronounce Sanskrit terms properly has been revealed. Have you been looking for an English / Sanskrit cross reference? Are the exact pronunciations of Sanskrit terms still a mystery? Would you like to learn a lot more about Sanskrit as it pertains to Yoga?

You don’t have to search anymore. “The Language of Yoga” is an interactive book and double CD set written by Nicolai Bachman. This interactive “course” includes more than 200 asanas with illustrated yoga postures and 300 Sanskrit definitions.

In between teaching Yoga classes and writing, I have some time to read, and I was happy that I took the time to read Nicolai Bachman’s 139 page cross reference book for converting Sanskrit terms to English.

The two CD’s that accompany the book make this work “come to life.” The first CD covers chants for Yoga practice, Yoga Sutras, and Yoga terms. The second CD covers Ashtanga sequences, names of asanas, and much more. In the course of studying this interactive book, you will learn the basic guidelines of pronunciation for many more words.

The author, Nicolai Bachman, guides you through correct pronunciations with the exact rhythm and tone. This book is a masterpiece and a priceless reference tool for any serious student, or teacher, of Yoga. For Yoga book collectors, this book will be remembered with your personal favorites.

At this time, there is no other book on the market that provides this much in-depth study of the Sanskrit Yoga words and cross references it with English. Words are grouped together by subject, such as numbers, Chakras, Bandhas, Mudras, Yamas, and Niyamas. Many of the words that you might hear in the average Yoga class are no longer a mystery to pronounce for English speaking Yoga students.

Nicolai Bachman, has been a teacher of Sanskrit, and
related subjects, since 1994. He has studied extensively at the VagYoga Institute in Varanasi, India, the American Sanskrit Institute, the American Institute of Vedic Studies, the Vedic Chant Center, the Ayurvedic Institute, and received his M.A. in Eastern Philosophy from St. John’s College.

Nicolai is a 500-hour level Registered Yoga Teacher. He teaches Sanskrit, Ayurveda, and Yoga Philosophy; Nicolai currently teaches in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This book will be released later this month, at which time we will have them in supply. Don’t stay in the dark about speaking Sanskrit, especially if you are teaching Yoga classes. Now, you can be confident that your pronunciation is correct.

I enjoyed the book so much that I ordered a shipment for our staff, on-site interns, and Yoga teachers, we network with worldwide. If you are interested in getting a copy, feel free to contact Aura Wellness Center.
