Advanced Knowledge From a Custom Textbook

September 27, 2011 · Filed Under Books · Comment

Having and using a custom textbook can have a significant impact not only on the student using it, but also on the person who writes it. The custom textbook allows a person to choose content from a variety of publishers as well as add in original content.Content of course is the most important part of any type of media, because without good content, the communication that is needed simply cannot take place between the informant and the person who wants to be informed. A complete failure can ensue, simply because of a lack of good quality relevant content. This is why having a custom textbook is so important to all parties who are involved.

This is why most publishing companies are giving professors the opportunity to choose and use their own literary creations for their instruction time. They have the choice to modify their custom textbooks and sites, majorly by adding some chapters, choosing their own words and photos, and other options as well. The textbooks are then marked with a unique ISBM with a different custom title.

Apart from the content of custom textbooks, they also carry additional costs that most standard issue editions do not necessarily have. Usually the cost varies from one publisher to another. The standard cost that a professor is required to pay in order to add content varies from $1.50 to an additional cost of approximately 5% in each case. In general, each publisher deals with hundred or even thousands of changes in any given custom textbook.

After release, one of these unique publications can cost a student between$20 on upwards of $200 or more, depending on the value of publishing the content and the amount of ideas being added to the material.

Students are able to benefit a lot from this type of learning material, even though it will be required that they pay extra charges. For the additional costs, learners benefit by the standard textbooks along with information available in the customized textbooks. During class, you may find out that a personal touch is provided to the curriculum, as it includes information that is of good benefit to both the students and the community at large.

The other important thing about the custom textbooks is that they cover a lot of ideas about technology. Thus they are fluid. Usually what gives the professor a chance to discover and develop the latest technology is when he is able to add some content into his teaching materials, and in the process a custom textbook is produced.

How to Get Your Book Published: How Bookstores Select Titles

July 25, 2011 · Filed Under Books · Comment

After the agents, editors, and the marketing departments at publishing houses have all made their decisions about what will be published, in what quantities, and how the finished product will look, there is one final decision maker who ultimately decides what books will be presented for sale to consumers: The buyer for the bookstores. The decision maker for the independent bookstores is often the owner, or the owner and several employees. Make sure when you’re thinking about how to get a book published that your book title will be considered by bookstores.

The chains have corporate buyers who specialize in different areas. The buyer looks at the prior sales history of the author, or if it is the author’s first book, the buyer will look at similar titles or topics. Of course the publisher’s sales rep, or the distributor, lets the buyer know of the marketing push the title will receive.

If advance reading copies (ARCs) are available or galleys, the uncorrected page proofs of a book, those are sent to the chains and major independents three to four months prior to the title’s publication date.

Booksellers usually buy their first order of a new title from the publisher through their sales reps. Subsequent orders can be placed directly with the publisher, through a distributor or wholesaler, which allows the bookstore to batch their orders to several different publishers and receive one invoice and make only one payment. It allows the bookstore to return books from different publishers to one place, the wholesaler.

Even small and micro publishers need to work through the distributor and wholesalers. Occasionally local authors will be allowed to place their self published or print on demand book on the shelves of their local bookstore on a consignment basis. That means that the store only pays the author for the book when and if it sells.

Many titles that aren’t physically stocked in the store itself can often be ordered and sent to the customer’s home, as long as the book is prepaid.

The decisions book buyers make about what titles to stock are a blend of taking into account the sales pitches from publishers’ reps, historical sales data available about an author or a topic, knowledge of their customer base, and to a large extent simply what their gut instinct tells them will be popular.

Bookstore placement is a critical factor in how to get a book published successfully.
