Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program, also known as Byrd Honors Scholarships, is funded federally but state-administered through the state education agencies (SEA) to support postsecondary education.

This program is created to recognize and distinguish outstanding and competent high school seniors who promise to demonstrate their commitment of constant academic achievement in postsecondary education.

The U.S. Department of Education provides funds to state education agencies that supervise public elementary and secondary schools in their respective States. These agencies award scholarships to the eligible students to meet their expenses of colleges.

States receiving the funds include, Puerto Rico, District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, the Virgin Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and The Federated States of Micronesia.

Renewal of the participation in the program is required each year by the states. The scholarship is of $1500 annually and at the maximum can support four years of study at any eligible higher education institution.

High school graduates who have enrolled at the higher education institutions and have exhibited excellent and impressive academic accomplishment and promise to continue their excellence can apply to states of which they are residents. Funds are granted to the states by the Department on the formula basis.

The eligibility conditions require that the year in which the scholarship is to be awarded, the student should have completed graduation from a public or private secondary school or have obtained an equally recognized high school diploma.

A student should be a legal resident of the state in which the scholarship is being applied for. He or she needs to be a citizen or a national of U.S. If a student is permanent resident in U.S. then proof from the U.S.

Immigration and Naturalization Service is required to show his resident status in order to depict that he has not been in the country for any temporary purpose.

Higher education institution must have accepted the enrollment of the student. An eligible student needs to certify that he has not defaulted on a Federal student loan or as a matter of fact any other obligation and thus qualifies for the assistance.

A student also needs to file with the school of his or her intention to attend a Statement of Selective Service Registration Status. The students who want to pursue their career in military and have enrolled in the military academy are not eligible to receive this scholarship.

SEA of the respective states sets the deadline for the applications and students should request from the state education agency for the application package and are also required to follow the instructions mentioned for the application procedures.

Trophies are souvenirs of victories. The most common trophies are awarded for sporting achievements. A trophy is an object of great admiration and idolization. Whether it is a school race or an Olympic medal, a trophy is much coveted.

A trophy is a memento of a victory, something that was worked on and won. Many times you see trophies for sports events and you can find them in many shapes and sizes. They can be highly sought after and prized, or they can be fun and humorous. Think of the World Cup as a highly prized trophy. Trophies can and are also used in corporate settings. Think of annual employee dinner where awards are given out.

You can find different trophies made of different materials. Many times they come plated in precious metals, or made of crystal. You can find trophies today made out of rare woods, and different kinds of molded plastics.

As times have changed, you can get trophies in just about any shape or size you can image. It is not uncommon to see shapes of footballs, soccer balls, tennis raquets, and more. You are probably familiar with the baseball player and bowling trophies on top of the little trophies you may have won as a child, or even as an adult.

Fun and whimsical trophies are even being made now. Humor is one of the categories now in trophy making. You can find beer can trophies, bobble head trophies. There are even services that you can get people to mount just about any kind of memento onto a base as a trophy now.

When thinking about some of the best or most coveted trophies out there, think of some of the big sports. All of the majore soccer tournaments has it’s own trophy. There are the soccer trophies as mentioned before with the FIFA World Cup, Copa America, Asia Cup among others. In golf, just about every championship tour offers a huge trophy of some kind. There is the PGA tour, the championship tour, and the Masters. Everyone is familiar with Olympic trophies as well. And Ice Hockey has one of the most memorable trophies out there.

There are trophies found in American Football as well. Think of the nice football shaped trophy everyone fights over on the sacred Sunday. It’s called the Superbowl trophy. As well, Sumo and Professional wrestling has their own sets of trophies. There is an award for just about every sport out there.

Getting back to corporate events, you can find trophies given also to municipal employees like firemen and police men. Where ever find a competition of some kind, you will find a trophy. Two really high profile events we never covered are the Academy Awards and the Grammys. Can you imagine not having a star or musician without one in their hand when they give their speech?

There are many uses for trophies and new awards presentations are always being organized. People will always love winning trophies! If you haven’t given a trophy out before, consider it. It may be one of the best things you ever did.

The present article has been read by many of our visitors and greatly appreciated. I hope you will enjoy it likewise.

Aerosmith Dream On was the first single ever created by the group. It was released with their first Album, Aerosmith, in 1973. The song has its roots in the blues.

Their first hit was Aerosmith Dream On. It only reached number 59 when it was originally released as a single. But in 1976 it made it all the way up to number six during its re-release. It was first played live at a Connecticut inn. Aerosmith Dream On later became part of several compilations and boxed sets.

The Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame named Aerosmith Dream On one of 500 songs that shaped rock music. Rolling Stone had it 172 out of 500 of the top songs ever made. Some Aerosmith fans believe this is their signature song.

Many times songs, such as Aerosmith Dream On, are sampled for other music. This is when a portion of a song is used in the new work. It was featured as a sample as part of the 2002 album Eminem Show. Aerosmith’s lead vocalist played the guitar solo on the track. Some less famous musicians also covered Aerosmith Dream On. Slim Thug is one of them.

Some claim the song was written by Led Zeppelin. It’s just a hoax. Some Buick commercials use the song. These same commercials tell people to dream up. It also appeared in several movies. These include Miracle from Walt Disney, and Last Action Hero.

Aerosmith Dream On can be heard in video games. It appeared in the opening cut scene of Dead or Alive Ultimate. Aerosmith even has their own game Guitar Hero Aerosmith. The game features a brand new recording. The song could be downloaded as part of Guitar Hero III. It was a promotion for the new game.

Aerosmith Dream On has been performed with a complete orchestra. MTVs 10th anniversary featured one such performance. The Boston Pops performed it in 2006. They have sometimes dedicated the song to deceased fans or fallen soldiers.

It’s not only a piece of rock ‘n roll history, Aerosmith Dream On is a piece of American history. Well thanks for your time and effort reviewing this article until next time happy reading.

When looking for retirement gifts, it is very important to find gifts that reflect the individual interest of the person, hobbies or favorite pastimes. Sure plaques and trophies are a nice way to recognize years of excellent service, but those are the kind of gifts that corporations will end up giving. Gifts are always appreciated more when it is something that they actually use and that brings joy and relaxation into their lives.

When someone enters retirement, they suddenly have all this free time on their hands. Some people already know how they are going begin enjoying retirement; other ones may take a little more time to adjust and are not quite sure retirement is such a good idea. Gifts that remind them of a prestigious career for example: teaching, lawyers, executives, doctors, judges, coaches or law enforcement, can often help with the transition and there are lots of unique gifts ideas to choose from that are career orientated.

Getting gifts that help them pursue their interests will also help, if they played golf for example: there are a lot of golfing accessories which can be anything from monogrammed ball markers to a new personalized golf bag or a yardage finder.

Other ideas could be a membership to a golf club, personalized golf balls or even a humorous gift like golfing lessons gives them something to look forward to. Anther example would be the military: there are patriotic paperweights, U.S. military rings, watches and other jewelry, they even make patriotic poker sets, beer mugs and throw blankets.

Gifts can be funny or inspirational too. There are T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and pillows available with witty sayings and funny pictures. Also available are unique doormats, mouse pads and picture frames that have humorous retirement sayings and meaningful poems that will remind them of your friendship.

Encourage them to relax with a comfortable and charming bed rest that enables a person to sit up comfortably while sitting in bed reading or watching TV. The bed rest also includes handy pockets for magazines and books or the TV remote. Or inspire them to look to the stars with a new telescope.

Ideas that are unique are often the most fun for example: A Day Clock has days of the week instead of numbers, because the person retiring does not have to worry about time anymore, they only have to know what day it is. Personalized items are very unique and can be anything nowadays. Items like: a beer mug, decanter set, deluxe chess set, personalized bar room sign or professional poker chip set. Other ideas include a day at the spa or salon, passport covers, watch box or valet tray, leather blackberry, ipod or CD case, gift baskets, travel manicure sets, garment bags or even a personalized fishing cooler and chair.

One last idea when looking for retirement gifts is to see if everybody in the office wants to go in on one big gift. These ideas include: a small vacation getaway, tickets to a favorite concert or event, membership to a gym or club of choice, a massaging recliner to help them unwind or even shares of stock. Perfect if they are into the stock market and if not it will not only give them something to do, but may spark a new interest.

Retirement this is a time of celebration for both the past achievements and a bright new future. If the gift is well though out, no matter if funny or practical, they will always remember who the master gift-giver is and appreciate your thoughtfulness. We all know what it is like to get gifts that do not really fit into our lifestyle, so make sure your retirement gift is something that will bring joy, fun and relaxation into their new way of life and your gift will always be cherished.

Good volunteers are hard to find. For all the good intentions of most of them, it’s rare to find ones who really throw themselves into the cause and go above and beyond expectations. However without a little acknowledgement from the organization, volunteers can feel taken for granted and get burned out. Here are a few ways you can show how much you appreciate the people who work for you.

Say Thank You

This should go without saying, but it’s surprising how many organizations forget this little bit of courtesy. This doesn’t mean the off the cuff “thanks” that we all toss out without thinking. When a volunteer does something exceptional, take the time out to express your gratitude. This reminds both the volunteer and yourself how important this person’s contributions are to the organization.

You can take it a step further and give them something material yet inexpensive. A handwritten note or card adds meaning to your gesture. E-cards are another free option that let you show your feelings toward your valuable workers.

Banquets

Arrange a party to show everyone how much you care. It gives everyone a chance to relax and have fun and doesn’t have to be expensive. Schedule a pot luck or see if you can find an organization that can donate food or party supplies. Make decorations that reflect your organization’s theme. For example, a charity that helps children might have pictures of the kids you’ve helped on the walls or at the tables.

There are lots of great themes that can make it feel like a real celebration and not just some boring company party. Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, indoor “beach” parties, 50s nostalgia or other fun ideas make it a fun event.

Recognition Awards

Although non-profit organizations are often looking for ways to save money, sometimes it’s worth a few dollars to really make a statement about the value of your volunteers.

Engraved recognition awards give your special volunteer a keepsake they can treasure for years. You might choose a basic company award or spring for an elaborate crystal trophy. There are lots of affordable options out there.

Combine the last two ideas and present your recognition awards at a banquet in the recipient’s honor. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate affair but the volunteers will appreciate the extra step you take.

Whatever you choose to do, find some way to let your volunteers know how much they are worth to you. Even dedicated people may move on to organizations where they are more appreciated. Contrary to popular belief, volunteers aren’t unpaid workers. They are employees who have chosen to accept compensation in less tangible forms such as job satisfaction and appreciation for their efforts.

Don’t undervalue these members of your organization. Whether you opt for recognition awards or simple pats on the back, let them know how you really feel.

Gift shopping is fun but some people can be hard to shop for! From the person who has everything to people you just don’t know very well, there are lots of clever and interesting gift ideas for everyone out there.

Recognition Awards

Sometimes we just want something simple that tells someone what they mean to us. However when our sentiments are expressed with tacky, mass-produced items the personal message is often is lost in the translation. Just how many “World’s Greatest Mom” mugs does one person need?

Instead, consider a recognition awards such as an inscribed crystal trophy. Not only does this create a breathtaking and memorable gift but you can inscribe it with a personal message that will carry more meaning than some stock phrase will.

Companies that offer employee recognition awards are a great place to find these types of gifts. When searching for personal gifts, these traditional employee recognition awards can take on an entirely new meaning. How about a “Friend of the Year” plaque to be presented at a birthday ceremony. Or, if you don’t want your other friends to get jealous, try “Susan of the Year” or “Best Golfer on Main Street”.

Photo Books

Digital photography is great. It allows us to always be ready to snap a picture or two (or two hundred) at any event. It’s easy to toss out the ones that don’t turn out and have a collection of photographic memories.

The problem is that most people seldom look at their digital photos. Maybe a special one will get put up as your computer wallpaper or emailed to friends, but generally they get looked at once or twice then forgotten. Most of us are tactile people. We want something we can hold in our hands. We want photo albums that we can flip through on the sofa with our family around us.

I would like to know what types of duties you receive medals for. My students have also come up with some questions. What is the highest ranking Medal you can get? Are there different types of Medals for each branch of the military? For each task or assignment, would there be a different Medal of Honor? Do you know any resources (books, magazines, websites) we can use to further our research?

The highest medal an American Military person can get is the Medal of Honor. Some call it the Congressional Medal of Honor, but the proper name is just “Medal of Honor”. I suggest you read some of the citations for the Medal of Honor, you will be awed at what these men have done.

There are different types of medals for each branch of the military, as well as the Coast Guard. This gets a bit complicated at times. Think of the awarding of medals like a pyramid: the highest, the Medal of Honor, is at the top. Although each branch of the service has a differently designed MOH, they are the same award. Next down is the Distinguished Service Cross/Navy Cross/Air Force Cross. This is also a valor award. Following that is a whole slew of other medals awarded for “Meritorious performance of duty” that don’t necessarily involve combat. The next highest valor award is the Silver Star followed by the Bronze Star (with ‘V’ means Valor, without ‘V’ means meritorious service). Each branch then has its own Commendation medals, the Army Commendation Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal. These can also have a “V” attached, for Valor in combat. Lastly, there are the Achievement Medals, Army Achievement, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement, Air Force Achievement, Coast Guard Achievement medals. They can also have “V” affixed, denoting Valor.

Notice how the pyramid works – the braver the act, the higher the award. You don’t have to get the others to get the Medal of Honor. (Some countries do this, most notably Germany during WWII; but suffice to say a soldier had to earn each level of the pyramid before moving on to the next. The highest German medal, somewhat equivalents to our Medal of Honor, was the Knights Cross to the Iron Cross).

For each task or assignment, there would be only 1 Medal of Honor. However, there are very few people who have ever gotten a second Medal of Honor, and most of them were given out during the time period of the Civil War to World War 1. No second award of the Medal of Honor has been given since then. Usually, once someone wins the MOH, they are pulled from the combat zone.

The pyramid was instituted around the WWII time period, basically because it was felt that some acts of valor were of a higher level than others, and vice versa, so they needed a medal to recognize them. There is also the topic of Campaign Medals, awarded for participation in a certain action or theatre of operations. The WWII period produced 5 of these types of awards.

1. The American Defense Service Medal: basically awarded to draftees and volunteers who served prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

2-4. American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medals: Awarded for service in these theatres of war. The American Campaign medal was for service in the area of the United States

5. World War 2 Victory Medal: awarded to any serving member of the military during the time period of WWII.

Finally, as to awards, most veterans of WWII came home with at least 2 medals, usually more. Contrast this to today military, who typically sport 13-15 medals after a tour in the combat zone.

The medals/ribbons that a WWII Army veteran of the European Campaign would typically have. Good Conduct Medal (awarded for staying out of trouble for 3 years, not a valor award), European Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal. If the vet was an active infantryman (most guys were not, it takes about 100 men to support the guy with the rifle in the foxhole), he may have a Bronze Star (every Infantryman in WWII was issued a Bronze Star Medal in late 1944 for combat service). He would also have a Combat Infantryman Badge, which is a Kentucky flintlock rifle on a blue enamel background, surrounded by a wreath. This signified the man had been in combat. Chances are he may have a Purple Heart as well; this medal is awarded for wounds (or death) due to enemy action (you don’t have to be in the Infantry to get it).
