Allied And Axis Battleships Of WWII

WWII was a war that strongly defined the history of the world. This war was fought in three fronts, on the ground with soldiers and Tanks, the air with bombers and fighter aircrafts, and on the sea with battleships, the following battleships occupy a very important place in the history of the war.

HMS Warspite – Great Britain

Build in Otober 31, 1912, at the Devonport Royal Dockyard, HMS Warspite was one of five Queen Elizabeth-class battleships built by the Royal Navy. It was the brainchild of First Sea Lord Admiral Sir John Fisher and First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill, the Queen Elizabeth-class became the first battleship class to be designed around the new 15-inch gun.

USS Arizona – United States

USS Arizona was a 31,400 ton Pennsylvania class battleship built at the New York Navy Yard in Brooklyn and commissioned in October 1916.

HMS Ark Royal – Carrier – Great Britain

MS Ark Royal was the first Large Aircraft carrier designed and laid down as a carrier for the Royal navy, she served in the Home Fleet and south Atlantic in 1939 and in the home Fleet and Mediterranean in 1940 as part of Force H in 1941 until she was destroyed by a German torpedo later in 1941.

DKM Bismarck – Battleship – Germany

DKM Bismarck was a German battleship of World War II named after Otto von Bismarck, famous for sinking HMS Hood in 1941 and for her subsequent pursuit and sinking. Design of the ship started in 1934.

USS Franklin – United States

USS FRANKLIN was the fifth ESSEX class aircraft carrier. It was badly damaged by a Japanese air strike on March 19, 1945, the FRANKLIN returned to the United States in April 1945 and remained at Brooklyn, NY. Following the end of the war, FRANKLIN was opened to the public for Navy Day celebrations. It was decommissioned at Bayonne, N.J. On May 15, 1959.

USS Indianapolis – Cruiser – United States

The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 15 November 1932. The ship served with honor from Pearl Harbor through the last campaign of World War II, sinking in action two weeks before the end of the war after it was torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-58.

Yamato – Battleship – Japan

In 1934 the Japanese started design work on the Yamato class Battleship and in 1937 the designs were approved and the Yamato was ordered for construction at the Kure naval yard Japan. The ship was completed in 1940 and she was finally launched on August 8 of that year. Three more Yamato class battleships were ordered but got canceled soon afterwards.

She was commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy on December 16 1941, 9 days after the outbreak of war with the USA.
