The Truth About Farm Raised Fish and Omega-3
The truth is that Omega-3 fatty acids that are so beneficial for you, your heart health and your brain health, originate in plants. This is a little known fact. Most people who know about Omega-3 fatty acids think it’s all about eating fish and it is with a couple of major caveats.
For example, to get the highest concentration of EPA/DHA, the two long-chained fatty acids that help prevent heart disease, and support brain and eye health, we are told to eat fish.
The problem is that most fish bought in the supermarket are farm raised and not wild. Fish farms are businesses that need to turn a profit. Corn based feeds are used to fatten up the fish, but corn yields little nutritional value and no Omega-3 benefits.
Corn is a starch, an it’s deception to think of it as a vegetable. As much I like to eat it, if I choose to eat corn, it may taste good, but it holds very little nutritional value for my optimal health goals. Tilapia raised on a farm is good for protein but not for Omega-3 content.
So where do the Omega-3s really come from? Fish is not the answer. We have to qualify the answer and say that wild fatty fish, like salmon and mackerel have a much higher content of Omega-3 oils. Yet that is still not an answer.
The truth is that the Omega-3s are inherent in these wild fish because they consume smaller fish or shrimp that consume phyto plankton. This is the most basic nutrition at the very bottom of the food chain. We humans can not eat phyto plankton at least not easily!
This is why an omega-3 such as krill oil, is much healthier and safer to consume than even natural fish oil because it is closer to the originating source and the life span of krill is so short compare to muscular fish that live a long time. The more mature the fish, the more industrial toxins from pollution it can ingest.
Now understand high grade fish oil that is molecularly distilled is perfectly safe for consumption. Just know your source and trust but verify.
Another benefit from taking krill oil or high grade fish oil is that it does not cause repeating, that is to say, burping and is much easier to consume as a supplement than relying on unknown fishy sources.
