Southwest Home Decor Tips

November 1, 2010 · Filed Under Interior Design · Comment

A home should be a relaxing place to get away from the stress of your day to day life. With that being said you should decorate to express your personality. If your home reflects you then you will truly have a place to call your own. Personal touches will make a house a home.

Southwest home decor is typically a blend of southwestern pieces with more traditional options to create a unique design for your home. A carbon copy of a million other people’s house will not help you to feel the same. Every person is singular and every home should be unique to the family that lives there.

There are four main categories in southwestern home decor. In no particular order there is the western style, the Mexican import, the modern southwestern and the native American. Each of these styles have southwestern hints but had a creativity and uniqueness to your home. The colors and styles of the pieces vary from one category to another.

The western style design is a way to honor early cowboy heritage of the area. When envisioning this style, think frontier chic. The items in this category are typical wild west in theme. They may include barbed wire, wagon wheels, horses, and cowboy boots and are almost always made of real or faux leather or cowhide. This is definitely a rustic take on this southwestern style.

Rustic could also be used to describe a room done in Mexican imports. The furniture in this room is most likely hand carved. Hand painted pottery and tile floors are common in these types of rooms. Mexican import rooms tend to be colorful and cheerful. They add a warm and personal touch especially in an entrance or family room.

Native Americans have lived in the southwest for centuries. It is only fitting that their style be part of the southwestern culture and design. Native American sand art and hand woven rugs can make a room in your home be warm and inviting to guest and yourself. These works of art will bring your room to life.

The final style is a modern take on southwest home decor. This style is sometimes referred to as a Santa Fe style. It is all about the colors. Mauve and purple with splashes of turquoise and pink make up the color pallet that is commonly associated with modern southwest decor. Pottery, as in all other southwestern styles, is important. This style in particular can also include hot peppers or chili peppers for kitchen items or wall art with desert views on the wall.

Mix your styles or combine two components. Remember when you are decorating your home you want to be pleasing to the eye but above everything else you want the style to reflect truly who you are. When you do this you do not have to stay true to one style group you can combine two or more of the groups to come up with a style that is all your own.
