Realistic Tips for Buying Puppies

January 15, 2010 · Filed Under Pets and Animals · Comment

Nothing in the world could be as cute as a puppy. When you’ve made the decision to make a puppy a part of your family, you will begin your search for puppies for sale. There are several things that you need to be aware of before selecting the puppy or puppies that you will buy.

Hopefully, you already know what you are looking for. For example, it is important to determine whether your puppy will grow to be a show dog or not. You need to know what sized dog you eventually want, because puppies do indeed grow. You also need to know if you prefer a certain breed, whether a full-breed dog is important, and other pertinent facts that pertain to what you want, in terms of a puppy, and eventually a fully grown dog.

It is important to have that information before you even begin your search, as it saves a great deal of time and effort. Remember that all breeds are very different in terms of their general personalities, as well as their intelligence and how well suited they are to being indoor or outdoor dogs.

Obviously, you will want to see registration papers for the puppies you buy before making that purchase, if breeding is important to you. While there are many full bred dogs available, who are not registered, it is important to see the registration papers if you will be showing or breeding the dog. Otherwise, it may not matter to you whether the puppy is registered or not.

Naturally, you will want to see any health records that are available for the puppy, and possibly for the parents, depending on the breed of the dog and whether or not that breed is susceptible to certain illnesses or conditions. You need a record of any treatment or exams that the puppy has had to date. Ask if the puppy is up-to-date on shots and vaccinations and worming, if the puppy has been spayed or neutered, and if the puppy has been micro chipped.

If possible, you should ask to see the entire litter and the parents, even if all that is available is pictures. This gives you the opportunity to gather more information about the puppy or puppies that you are considering. Pay attention to how healthy the dogs appear to be, as well as how well they have been taken care of, including the conditions in which they have been living.

You will of course want to know the price of the puppy, and check to see if this price is reasonable, as compared to prices charged by other breeders. Note that females are almost always more expensive than males. Also note that puppies that have champion level parents are very expensive as compared to those that do not have champion level parents.

In many cases, there will be a written contract. This contract should specifically identify and describe the puppy or puppies for sale that you have agreed to purchase. It should also include a guarantee, which should allow you to return the dog within a certain amount of time, for a full refund, if the puppy isn’t healthy, as determined by your veterinarian.

When you find the puppy that is right for your family, and you decide to make a purchase, it should be a pleasant, stress-free experience for you – particularly if you are making your purchase from a reputable breeder. If at any time you do not feel right about the purchase, or the condition of the puppy, you should have the option of backing out of the sale – before it is made, and again, for a certain period of time after the purchase has been made as well.

Preparing Your Home for a New Puppy

January 8, 2010 · Filed Under Pets and Animals · Comment

Bringing a new puppy home can be very exciting. Unfortunately, many people find puppies for sale, and don’t stop to consider how their home needs to be prepared for that puppy before making the purchase and bringing the puppy home. Don’t make this mistake. Make your puppy buying decision very carefully – first – and make sure that your home is really prepared for the arrival of your new puppy.

Start by preparing your family members – especially children. You will need to set rules pertaining to how the puppy is treated, handled, and cared for. All family members should be involved in the puppy’s life – and all should contribute to his or her care. Make sure that your children understand how a small puppy should be handled to prevent injury to either the puppy or the children.

Next, make sure that you have purchased the supplies that your puppy will need. Absolute essentials include food, food and water dishes, a leash and collar, chew toys, and grooming supplies. It is always a good idea to have a bed for the puppy as well. Because puppies are small, and they do get into things, you might also seriously consider a playpen for the puppy, or some other type of gating system to keep the puppy in one specific area until he or she is potty trained, or at least big enough to be safe in other areas of your home.

You will need a carrier for your puppy. This is true even if the puppy is being delivered to you, as it will be used for trips to the veterinarian, the kennel, or the pet store. To save money, choose a carrier that will be large enough for the puppy when he is full grown, and get a quality carrier that will last for years and years.

Next, you need to prepare your home. First, establish a place for the puppy. This will be his or her area for a while. This will be the area where he or she eats and sleeps, for the most part, but this may also be the area that the puppy is in when you cannot keep your eyes on it. Here, you must think like a puppy. Look around at things that will be chewed, including furniture. Remove all electrical cords, and anything else that may be a danger to the puppy. Look for potential escape options for the puppy as well.

Plants can be a potential danger for your puppy – but he won’t know that. He will eat them, and they could be poisonous. Get all plants out of puppy’s reach, and although puppies do not climb to the extent that kittens do – they do climb. Consider this when putting things out of reach. Pay attention to the things that hang, such as curtains and tablecloths. Your puppy will happily grab the edge with his teeth and take off running.

Anything that means a great deal to you should be stored away in a closet or a room where the puppy will never be. Puppies jump, tails wag, and there is a lot of rough housing going on throughout the day. If you don’t want it chewed, broken or scratched, put it away.

Finally, remember that dogs are smart – and this is true of puppies too. It won’t take your new puppy long to figure out how to open cabinets, and you may find that he opens doors and drawers as well. Use safety locks on these closures just as you would if you had a human toddler in the home – for the protection of the puppy, as well as the contents of drawers, cabinets, and closets.

Is It Safe to Buy Puppies Online?

January 1, 2010 · Filed Under Pets and Animals · Comment

So, you’ve decided to buy puppies for sale, and you are looking for that special puppy online, so that you have more options available to you. This is a good choice for many people, but many wonder if it is safe to buy puppies online. This all depends on how you handle the purchase, and on the website you are purchasing the puppy from.

Not only does purchasing a puppy online give you more options, but it also allows you to save a great deal of time because you do not have to travel from one location to another to see different puppies. This alone also saves you a great deal of money. If you aren’t careful, however, you could end up with a sick puppy, or in some cases, no puppy at all.

The correct – safe – way to purchase a puppy online is to start by selecting your puppy through a reputable website. Never purchase a puppy without first seeing a picture of the puppy as well. You will also want to see copies of all documentation concerning the puppy, and possibly the puppies parents as well, depending on whether you will be showing the dog or not. Verify all information on documents that pertain to the puppy, such as registration, visits to the veterinarian, and other information.

Verify who is selling the puppy. This person should have a working telephone number, and should not have any issue with speaking to you on the telephone. Check the telephone number to see whom it belongs to. Look up the address of the person as well and verify that this is indeed their address. Communicate via email and telephone often.

Ask if they have sold other puppies online, and if so, ask for references. Check those references to see what the experiences of those new puppy owners have been with this particular seller, as well as with the puppy that they purchased. Use online resources to see if there are any complaints about this person, in relation to selling puppies or other business practices, by entering their name into your favorite search engine.

If the purchase is not being made through a third party website, it is important that you handle the funds for your puppy purchase carefully. You might want to make use of an escrow service, which is very affordable. Naturally, you will need to work out shipping arrangements with the seller as well, in terms of how you will receive the puppy, and who will pay for the puppy’s transportation. In some cases, this will be you, and in other cases, those who sell puppies on a regular basis include the cost of transporting the puppy in the price of the puppy.

Your best bet for purchasing a puppy online, however, is to use a reputable website where sellers list their puppies, along with pictures, based on where they are located geographically. You simply view the information about the puppies for sale in your geographic region, so that you can go and pick up your puppy in person, and see the puppy in person before making the purchase. This is the method that most people are comfortable with, but if you cannot locate a puppy that you want in your geographical location, you may have to make the purchase online, without seeing the puppy in person first.

With that said, you should know that about a quarter of a million puppies are sold over the Internet each year, and in most of those cases, the new puppy owner ends up with a puppy that they are very satisfied with – there are actually few instances of problems, if you use good common sense, your instincts, and follow some simple guidelines in making your online puppy purchase.

Choosing the Right Puppy for Your Family

December 25, 2009 · Filed Under Pets and Animals · Comment

You’ve found puppies for sale that are just adorable, and you’ve decided to purchase one. Before you make that purchase, however, are you certain that you are choosing the right puppy for your family? There are still many, many things to consider once you’ve decided that a puppy will make a wonderful addition to your family. Here are some things that should not be overlooked.

Breed – Will your puppy just be a member of the family, or might he or she also double as a show dog? Will the puppy eventually be used for breeding purposes? All of this plays a vital role in determining which puppy you purchase.

Size – while puppies are typically small and cute, they do grow. Some grow to be quite large and heavy. What is the appropriate size of the full grown dog that your puppy will eventually be, in terms of available space? This must be considered whether the puppy will be an indoor or outdoor dog.

Potential Illnesses and Conditions – Certain breeds of dogs are at a higher risk for potential illnesses and conditions, and this can not only be costly, it can also be heartbreaking. Take the time to be aware of the potential health concerns of the breed of puppy that you are considering before making a final decision.

Personality – All dogs have their own unique personality, but some breeds have expected personalities. Do you want a watchdog? Do you want a puppy that will grow with your children and love them? Do you want a lap dog? Do you want a highly social dog, or a dog that isn’t quite so social? Research the breed that you are considering to find out what you can expect – generally – concerning that breeds personality.

Your family – What type of puppy will be best for the people and other pets that live in your home? For example, if you have small children, you will want to select a breed that is known for being good with children specifically. If the puppy that you select will require special care, beyond that of most puppies, how well prepared are other family members to help out? If you have young children who tend to play rough, a small delicate dog may not be advised. Consider the needs of the puppy, as well as the needs of your family, and try to visualize the puppy being in your home, around your family members in day-to-day life before making a decision.

Although experts will say that dogs live to be an average of fifteen years, you may want to select a certain breed that is known to live longer, on average, or for a shorter period of time, on average. Remember that you are making a lifelong commitment to the puppy – meaning that you are committed to keeping and caring for the puppy for his or her entire life. Are you ready to invest fifteen years?

Determine which family member the puppy will actually belong to. This is the person that the dog will form the deepest bond with, and it is very important. For example, if your child will be leaving for college in four or five years, this can be very traumatic for the dog, which will be left behind. This may mean that you don’t want to get a puppy of a certain age, or that you want to get an older dog.

Consider the puppy carefully before making a decision. There may be other considerations pertaining to the selection of your puppy that are specific to you and your family. Never make a puppy purchase on the spot, without putting a great deal of time and thought into the decision.

Are You Ready to Buy a Puppy?

December 18, 2009 · Filed Under Pets and Animals · Comment

Puppies are a great deal of fun, and they are incredibly cute. There may be many reasons why you want a puppy, but those reasons need to be considered carefully. It is important to know for sure whether you are ready for a puppy or not, before you start looking at puppies for sale.

Consider the fact that bringing a puppy into your home is much the same as bringing a new child into your home. The puppy will need lots of care and lots of time, and if there are other children or pets in the home, ‘sibling rivalry’ could immediately ensue, turning an otherwise peaceful and happy home into a virtual war zone. Consider how bringing a puppy into the home will affect all that already live in that home – whether they are two-legged or four-legged family members.

Are you prepared to care for the puppy? Again, puppies take a great deal of care and time. If you work all day, there may be issues with leaving the puppy alone for long periods of time. Like babies, puppies don’t necessarily sleep all night. They must be fed regularly, bathed, and of course, played with and loved. All of this is vital not only to the health of your puppy as he or she grows, but also to the personality that your puppy will have when he or she reaches adulthood.

Puppies are seldom easy on furniture, shoes, or anything else within their reach. They will chew – everything. Are you prepared for this? You would be amazed at the people who overlook this well known fact about puppies, only to find that they are miserable with a puppy in the home after making their puppy purchase. Consider this carefully, and make sure that you are ready to not only watch your puppy, but also to provide alternative chewing opportunities for him or her as well. Remember that even well behaved puppies and dogs can be a problem, because they shed hair and have accidents.

Considering ‘accidents,’ are you prepared to clean up after him? Are you prepared to housetrain the dog? House training can take some time, and if the puppy will be staying indoors, which is highly recommended, it is necessary. Even after the puppy is housetrained, it is important to realize that dogs – like people – get sick sometimes, and they may still make a mess on the carpet.

Before you select a puppy for sale, make sure that you are fully aware of how large the puppy will be once it reaches adulthood. Do you have adequate space for your puppy now, and in the future? Are you prepared for the barking that your dog will do, and in the case of puppies, the whining? Are your neighbors prepared?

Are you prepared to walk your puppy everyday, often several times a day, no matter what the weather is, for the rest of his or her life? Do you have a fenced in yard that is suitable instead? Make sure that you consider these things carefully, remembering that this is a requirement. Also remember that you cannot take off for the weekend, without your puppy, unless you’ve made suitable arrangements for his or her care in your absence. It isn’t wise to leave the puppy home alone.

Finally, consider the cost of the puppy – beyond the cost of puppies for sale. These costs include regular visits to the veterinarian for checkups and shots, trips to the veterinarian when the puppy becomes ill or injured, food, cleaning products, treats, leashes, brushes, pet beds, and more.

If you’ve considered all of these things carefully, and you are still ready to move forward with buying a puppy, then you are most likely fully ready to bring a sweet puppy into your home, and to make him or her part of your family.
