Will Solar Energy Ever Be A Viable Option?
I am not a scientist or engineer but I have always been interested in energy. I enjoy tinkering with my car and pottering around with electrical equipment to see how it works and if it could be made better. And ever since I learned about Prometheus, the Greek God who stole fire from the heavens and brought it to Earth, the idea of getting power from the sky has always fascinated me. I guess that is why I am so interested in solar power and its potential.
Mankind has always used solar energy, although for a long time it was unconscious and unquestioning. From the first cave men who stepped out of their cold caves to warm themselves in the sunlight to the housewife of a century ago who hung her washing out to dry in the sun solar power has served us.
Over the last 50 years or so, research into more complex applications of solar power have been increasing. The twin problems of ever increasing pollution and the high cost of fossil fuels have driven this. Great strides have been made in harnessing solar energy to produce not just heat, but power to meet our ever increasing demand for it.
But solar power is still a small adjunct to the mainstream electricity generation options like thermal, hydro and nuclear. The reason is simple. While its possible to convert sunlight into electricity by using photo voltaic solar panels, the process is extremely inefficient when compared to traditional generation methods. Industrial and commercial applications of solar power still seem a long way off.
But if there has been any real progress in the harnessing of solar power, it has been in the field of solar home energy systems. That is where my interest lies and where I am devoting all my spare time to installing a comprehensive home solar energy system in my house. I am far from being independent of the electricity company to meet my homes power needs, but I have reduced my dependence on them to some extent and have also reduced my monthly electricity bills.
I started my home solar energy system by installing solar water heating the simplest and oldest of the modern solar power technologies. This does nothing more than use solar heat to warm up water which is then stored for later use. This is not technologically advanced it just applies the inherent heat of the sun to the water. It works, except when it is very cloudy, when I have to go back to the traditional water heating methods.
Next, I proceeded on the next phase of my home solar energy system, convert sunlight into electricity. To be honest, it was expensive and the results I have gotten, while being good, have not been those which would immediately justify the cost of the panels. And of course, while the power does reduce my consumption of electricity from the electricity company, I am far from being independent in my power needs.
I hope home solar home energy systems become both more economical and efficient in the future. Current trends seem to indicate that this will happen. For the present I am happy with my efforts. My solar home energy system I have installed may not have freed me from fossil fuels, but at least I have taken the first steps down the road.

My Experiments With Solar Power
Some years ago when I retired and shifted to a small cottage in the country I was looking for something to occupy my time and stumbled upon solar home energy systems. I began by installing a solar water heating system in my home. This was a fairly simple job which even a layman like me could understand. Solar panels placed on the roof absorbed the heat from the sunlight and used it to heat water in a nearby tank. This hot water was then transferred to an insulated storage tank where it remains hot, and can be used as and when needed. It works well and except then it is very cloudy, I do not need to use any other method of water heating. The success of the solar water heater drove me to look at the next stage in home solar energy systems generating electricity.
This was much more complicated and involved the use of solar photo voltaic panels that convert sunlight into electricity which can either be used directly or stored in batteries for later use. This system also works, but let me admit that the results are not as great as with the water heating process. The problem lies in the relative inefficiency of the photo voltaic panels that convert the sunlight into electricity. The more panels that are exposed to sunlight, the more electricity produced. But since the panels are quite big and I have limited area to place them without ruining the looks of my home, the amount of electricity generated is not enough to make me energy independent.
I still have to draw electricity from the grid to keep my house running. But the electricity produced by the solar home energy system has brought down my electricity bills appreciably. Of course the capital cost of the equipment for the solar home energy system was quite high and it will take me some years to recover my investment. After that its all savings.
I keep reading about new advances in solar energy and solar home energy systems. Things like thin film solar panels promise to revolutionize the efficiency of solar energy systems. So I do look forward to the day when my solar home energy systems will make me completely independent of commercially bought electricity.

If the money is available, this is the best time to buy one. With the demand so low, prices are also low, with most manufacturers of home solar energy systems offering large discounts and very attractive payment terms. These deals will last only as long as the economic downturn and the prices will begin to climb as the economy gets back on its feet.
And the savings on energy costs begins from day one. They may be small, but if they are balanced over a period of a year with the low current cost of buying a home solar energy system, the figures begin to look more attractive. Add to this the fact that the current low oil prices will begin their upward climb once the world gets out of the recession and the potential savings on direct energy costs could increase as heating bills begin to go up.
