Van Halen Tickets : Howard Stern’s Eddie Van Halen Live Interview Broke The Band’s Long Silence

January 10, 2012 · Filed Under Music · Comment

Rumors of a David Lee Roth reunion re-emerged and on January 3, 2006, Roth explained during an interview that he spoke to Alex Van Halen the previous week and a reunion was “inevitable”.[26] However, he also said that Eddie Van Halen was “off in his own little world” recently. When asked if any problems occurred with Sammy Hagar during the 2004 tour Eddie Van Halen answered, “Sammy is Sammy, and for the most part that’s just fine”. Roth persisted with suggestions of a reunion,[27] saying. “People want the reunion,” and “No one will pay respect to what any of us do [musically] until we get the reunion out of the way.” In May 2006, he told Billboard.com, “There’s contact between the two camps.”

On June 3, Michael Anthony began a successful tour with Hagar billed as “The Other Half” (a reference to them being half of Van Halen with the other half being Eddie/Alex), with Anthony singing lead vocals sometimes. Meanwhile, on June 19 the Van Halen brothers jumped onstage with Kenny Chesney at The Home Depot Center performing “Jump” and “You Really Got Me”. This unusual performance was their first onstage since the 2004 tour. This was followed by another Eddie Van Halen performance on July 19, 2006, at the House of Petals in Los Angeles, playing new material. He followed this with an announcement on July 27, 2006, that some of his new music would be released on the soundtrack for the pornographic film Sacred Sin.

In March 2006, Michael Anthony spoke to Japanese rock magazine Burrn!,[28] claiming the brothers did not want him on the 2004 reunion tour, although Hagar did (and would not play without Anthony), but he had to agree to reduced royalties and end absolutely all association with the band after the tour in terms of rights to using the name to promote himself.[29] It was in this same interview he admitted he was not involved in the new songs on Best of Both Worlds and only recorded three tracks for III.

On September 8, 2006, Howard Stern’s Eddie Van Halen live interview broke the band’s long silence. Eddie said he was willing to reunite with Roth and revealed a solo album in the works. Michael Anthony’s departure was confirmed with Eddie’s son, Wolfgang, taking his role. Wolfgang had played bass guitar alongside his father on some 2004 concerts.

When queried about The Other Half tour, Eddie said Anthony could “do what he wants” now. This shocked and offended many fans.In November, Eddie’s spokesperson, Janie Liszewski, claimed the Van Halen family was writing/rehearsing for a Summer 2007 tour, which Billboard magazine’s website shortly confirmed. However, the Van Halen website remained in the state it had been in since the Hagar reunion.

On December 11, 2006, Eddie Van Halen stated to Guitar World magazine that David Lee Roth had been directly invited to rejoin the band. However, on December 28, Roth announced that he had not talked to Eddie in two years, and a reunion with Van Halen could result in a “Jerry Springer style fight”.

In January 2007, Van Halen was announced as one of that year’s inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Van Halen brothers, Anthony, Hagar, and Roth were to be inducted. Billboard announced on January 24, 2007 that Van Halen would reunite with David Lee Roth for a US tour .This was confirmed shortly after on the official Van Halen website.

The Van Halen News Desk announced on February 15, 2007, that a Van Halen “Best Of (1978/1984)”, a single-disc compilation of Van Halen’s David Lee Roth era, would be released by April 3. Shortly after, information arrived in a flood. Various sources claimed the tour was shut down as was the new “Best Of” CD.

On March 8, 2007 Eddie announced on Van Halen’s website that he was in rehab. Along with the announcement, a change was made to the website. The logo at the top of the page changed to the original Van Halen logo from their 1978 debut album. As the band’s Hall of Fame induction drew near, media focus shifted to that. Velvet Revolver would induct the band and speak on their behalf.

On March 12, 2007, the band was inducted at a ceremony held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Anthony and Hagar were the only inductees in attendance (ironically, both ex-members). Velvet Revolver played “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”, and Anthony and Hagar performed “Why Can’t This Be Love” with Paul Shaffer. At a post-induction press conference, Hagar said he would love to work with Van Halen again but that the Van Halens should tour with Roth first.

On April 21, 2007, Eddie Van Halen served as an Honorary Race Official for the Subway Fresh Fit 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. He looked fit and well, better than he had on the last tour, and on May 24 posted a note to the Van Halen website confirming that he had exited rehab successfully.

After nearly 10 months of speculation and numerous rumors, Van Halen (and David Lee Roth separately via his own website) said that the band would be going on a tour of North America. Roth claimed in the press release that, “the idea is that this will continue on and on and on” and also that a world tour and new album were in the works.

Press reaction to the reunion was largely warm, but the re-designed website sparked controversy when Michael Anthony was removed from images of old album artwork. The album covers were reverted to normal a day later without a word. The Fall 2007 tour was originally 25 dates, but was extended into 2008 with a second leg.

Van Halen started their new tour on September 27, 2007, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Playing to sellout crowds, the tour generated positive reviews.Amid rumors of Eddie being back in rehab, multiple dates of the tour were postponed. The official reason was the need for medical procedures to be run on Eddie.

On March 5, 2008, World Entertainment Weekly to CBS News reported that the reason behind the tour stoppage was due to Eddie Van Halen needing to reenter rehab. The report also indicated that it was a “furious backstage bust-up in Florida with his 17-year-old son and bandmate Wolfgang” which motivated Eddie to seek help once again.

In response to rumors about Eddie Van Halen being back in rehab Valerie Bertinelli said that “he is not in rehab.” She did not, however, say if he had recently been in rehab, stating only that he wasn’t currently, a statement echoed by Wolfgang Van Halen during the 2008 Kids Choice Awards. Eventually, the tour started back up April 17 at the Reno Events Center in Nevada.

The tour ended on June 2, 2008, at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI. During the show Roth stated multiple times that this would not be their final show and that they would “see everyone next time.” At this show the arena sign was altered, as to read “VAN HALEN ARENA”. According to the Van Halen News Desk, the reunion tour with Roth was the highest grossing in the band’s history, raking in almost 93 million dollars.

Neil Diamond Tickets : Diamond Would Also Garner A Golden Globe Award For Best Original Score

December 29, 2011 · Filed Under Music · Comment

Diamond had signed a deal with MCA Records, whose label at the time was Uni (after MCA’s parent company, Universal Pictures), he moved to Los Angeles in 1970. His sound mellowed, with such songs as “Sweet Caroline”, a US hit in 1969, “Holly Holy”, “‘Cracklin’ Rosie” and “Song Sung Blue”, the last two reaching No. 1 on the Hot 100. “Sweet Caroline” was Diamond’s first major hit after his slump.

Diamond admitted in 2007 that he had written “Sweet Caroline” for Caroline Kennedy after seeing her on the cover of Life in an equestrian riding outfit. It took him just one hour, in a Memphis hotel, to write and compose it. The 1971 release “I Am…I Said” was a Top 5 hit in both the US and UK, and was his most intensely personal effort to date, taking upwards of four months to complete.

In 1972, Diamond played 10 sold-out concerts at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The August 24 performance was recorded and released as the live double album Hot August Night (the title being the opening words of Diamond’s song “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show”). That fall, he appeared over 20 consecutive nights at the Winter Garden Theater in New York City; the small Broadway venue provided an intimate concert setting not common at the time. Reportedly, every performance was a sellout.

Hot August Night demonstrates Diamond’s skills as a performer and showman, as he reinvigorated his back catalogue of hits with new energy. Many consider it his best work; critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine calls Hot August Night “the ultimate Neil Diamond record … [which] shows Diamond the icon in full glory”.

The album has become a classic. It was remastered in 2000 with three additional selections: “Walk on Water”, “Kentucky Woman” and “Stones”. In Australia, the album spent a remarkable 29 weeks at No. 1; in 2006, it was voted #16 in a poll of favourite albums of all time in Australia. Also, Diamond’s final concert of his 1976 Australian Tour (The “Thank You Australia” Concert) was broadcast to 36 television outlets nationwide on March 6 and remains the country’s most-watched music event.

It also set a record for the largest attendance at the Sydney Sports Ground.[citation needed] The 1977 concert Love At The Greek, a return to the Greek Theatre, includes a version of “Song Sung Blue” with duets with Helen Reddy and Henry Winkler, a.k.a. Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli of Happy Days.In 1973, Diamond hopped labels again, returning to the Columbia Records for a lucrative million-dollar-advance-per-album contract.

His first project, released as a solo album, was the soundtrack to Hall Bartlett’s film version of Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The film received hostile reviews and did poorly at the box office. The album grossed more than the film did. Richard Bach, author of the best-selling source story, disowned the film. Both Bach and Diamond sued the film’s producer.

Diamond felt the film butchered his score. Despite the shortcomings of the film, the soundtrack was a success, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard albums chart. Diamond would also garner a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture.

From there, Diamond would often include a Jonathan Livingston Seagull suite in his live performances, as he did in his 1977 “Love at The Greek” concert. In 1974, Diamond released the album Serenade, from which “Longfellow Serenade” and “I’ve Been This Way Before” were issued as singles. The latter had been intended for the Jonathan Livingston Seagull score, but was completed too late for inclusion.

In 1976, he released Beautiful Noise, produced by Robbie Robertson of The Band. On Thanksgiving night, 1976, Diamond made an appearance at The Band’s farewell concert, The Last Waltz, performing “Dry Your Eyes”, which he had written with Robertson, and which had appeared on Beautiful Noise. He also joined the rest of the performers onstage at the end in a rendition of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released”.

In 1977, Diamond released I’m Glad You’re Here With Me Tonight, including “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”, for which he composed the music and collaborated with Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman on lyrics. Barbara Streisand covered the song on her Songbird album, and later, a Diamond-Streisand duet, spurred by the success of radio mash-ups, was recorded. That version hit No. 1 in 1978, his third song to top the Hot 100.

His last 1970s album was September Morn, which included a new version of “I’m a Believer”. It and “Red Red Wine” are his best-known original songs made more famous by other artists. In February 1979, the uptempo “Forever in Blue Jeans”, co-written with his guitarist, Richard Bennett, was released as a single from You Don’t Bring Me Flowers, Diamond’s album from the previous year.

According to Cotton Incorporated, “Neil Diamond might have been right when he named his 1979 #1 hit ‘Forever in Blue Jeans’: 81% of women are planning their next jeans purchase to be some shade of blue.” The song has been used to promote the sale of blue jeans, most notably via Will Ferrell, impersonating Diamond singing, for The Gap. Ironically, Diamond himself had performed in radio ads for H.I.S. brand jeans in the 1960s, more than a decade before he and Bennett jointly wrote and composed, and he originated, the selection.

New York Knicks Tickets : The Knicks Struggled To Recapture Their Former Success

December 28, 2011 · Filed Under Basketball · Comment

The Knicks are one of only two teams of the original National Basketball Association still located in its original city (the other being the Boston Celtics). The “Knickerbocker” name comes from the pseudonym used by Washington Irving for his A History of New York, which name became applied to the descendants of the original Dutch settlers of what later became New York, and later, by extension, to New Yorkers in general

The Knicks were successful during their early years and were constant playoff contenders. Beginning in 1950, the Knicks made three consecutive appearances in the NBA Finals, all of which were losing efforts. Subsequently, the team began to falter and it was not until the late sixties when Red Holzman became head coach did the Knicks begin to regain their former dominance. Holzman successfully guided the Knicks to two championships in 1970 and 1973.

Though a consistent playoff contender afterwards, New York struggled to recapture their former success. In the past decade the Knicks have only made the playoffs twice most recently losing to the Boston Celtics in the first round of contention under the lead of Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony.

The Knicks and former Phoenix Suns forward/center Amar’e Stoudemire came to an agreement on July 5, 2010.The sign and trade was made official on July 8 as Stoudemire agreed to an approximately $100 million contract over the span of five years. Team president Donnie Walsh recognized the signing of Stoudemire as a turning point for the future of a Knicks team that had struggled in recent years.

The Knicks continued to redesign their roster trading David Lee to the Golden State Warriors for Anthony Randolph, Kelenna Azubuike and Ronny Turiaf. The Knicks also struck deals with former Bobcats point guard Raymond Felton and Russian center Timofey Mozgov. The Knicks regained their title as the most valuable franchise in the NBA following these acquisitions, though this was mainly due to the arrival of Stoudemire, whose star power allowed the team to resurge; the Knicks sold out their full-season ticket inventory for the first time since 2002.

D’Antoni along with Stoudemire and the core of young players, including Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Mozgov, Wilson Chandler and rookie Landry Fields, piloted the Knicks to a 28/26 record prior to the All-Star break marking the first time the team had been above the .500 mark at that point of the season since 2000.In spite of the team’s mounting success,New York made a push to acquire Denver Nuggets standout Carmelo Anthony.

After months of speculation, on February 21, 2011, Anthony was traded to New York, with teammates Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter, and former Knick Renaldo Balkman. Denver acquired Felton, Gallinari, Chandler, Mozgov, Kosta Koufos, a 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors’ second round draft picks for 2013 and 2014 and $3 million in cash. In addition, the Knicks sent Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to the Minnesota Timberwolves and in return the Timberwolves’ Corey Brewer was sent to the Knicks.

The Knicks clinched their first playoff berth since the 2004 NBA Playoffs in a rout of the Cleveland Cavaliers on April 3, 2011. Carmelo Anthony ensured the franchise’s first winning season since 2000 on April 10, 2011, against the Indiana Pacers, as Anthony scored the game winning basket for the Knicks and subsequently blocked Danny Granger’s shot in the final seconds of the game.

The Knicks were ultimately eliminated from contention in the first round on April 24, 2011 by the Boston Celtics, losing the series 4/0. In spite of Donnie Walsh’s successful efforts to help rebuild the franchise, he decided not to return as the team’s president and general manager, electing to step down at the end of June 2011 citing the uncertainty surrounding his ability to continue to manage the daily operations of the team Glen Grunwald was elected as interim president and general manager.

Following the conclusion of the 2011 NBA lockout, the Knicks engaged in a sign-and-trade deal with the Mavericks for center Tyson Chandler on December 10, 2011, with Chandler signing a four year $58 million contract. In return, the Knicks sent Andy Rautins and an $11 million trade exception to the Mavericks. Ronny Turiaf and $3 million cash considerations were sent to the Wizards to complete the three-way trade.

Les Miserables Tickets : The Friends Of The Abc Were An Intellectual Society As In The Musical

December 15, 2011 · Filed Under Arts · Comment

The Broadway production opened 12 March 1987, and ran until 18 May 2003, closing after 6,680 performances. It is the third longest running Broadway show in history and was the second-longest at the time. A fully re-orchestrated Broadway revival opened on 9 November 2006 at the Broadhurst Theatre.

The show was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won eight, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. It placed first in a BBC Radio 2 listener poll of the “Nation’s Number One Essential Musicals” in June 2005, receiving more than forty percent of the votes. It was one of several British musicals on Broadway in the 1980s along with Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, and Miss Saigon.

The musical’s emblem is a picture of the waif Cosette sweeping the Thenardier’s Inn, usually shown cropped to a head-and-shoulders portrait with the French national flag superimposed. The picture is based on the illustration by Emile Bayard that appeared in the novel’s original 1862 edition.

Several discrepancies between the 1,400+ page novel and musical exist. The Bishop has a much bigger role in the novel, taking up many pages. He appears in a single scene at the start of the show. The novel also grants more time to describing Valjean’s time in Toulon and what it did to his spirit.

Javert’s background is well-described in the novel. Javert faced discrimination as a child; his mother was a gypsy prostitute, his father a thief. The only hints to his back-story in the show come during “The Confrontation” where he sings, “I was born inside a jail, I was raised with scum like you, I am from the gutter, too.” In the show his lifelong devotion to justice and the law is the means by which he redeems himself in God’s eyes.

Monsieur and Madame Thenardier are not the humorous, curmudgeonly husband-and-wife they appear to be in “Master of the House”. In the novel, they are portrayed as vile, selfish people. Madame Thenardier is referred to as the “Thenardiess”, a term more suitable for a hideous female giant. In both versions, however, the Thenardiers’ complete lack of morals is obvious.

In the musical, Eponine, while still ragged, has an approachable look and personality, is more ethical, more romanticized, and has been given a more sympathetic depiction. She has a younger sister named Azelma, who is not in the musical. In the epilogue of the novel, Azelma travels with M. Thenardier to America where he becomes a slave owner/trader. His wife had long since died in prison.

In the musical, both Thenardiers survive while their only mentioned daughter, Eponine, (and presumably, their legacy) dies. However, in the French Concept album and the original French musical, Azelma is present. In the novel, Gavroche is Eponine and Azelma’s much ignored younger brother and the Thenardiers’ eldest son. Although Gavroche appears in the musical, he speaks about the Thenardiers as if he is not related to them at all and it can be assumed that he lives on the streets, seemingly an orphan.

The Thenardiers have two other sons, whom they also abandon. Like Azelma, they are cut from the musical. In the novel, M. Thenardier was present in the Battle of Waterloo, picking gold and bullets off bodies after the battle. One barely conscious man believed Monsieur Thenardier had saved his life. This man was Colonel Georges Pontmercy, Marius’ father. Marius always spoke of the great man Thenardier who saved his father’s life.

All this is omitted from the musical, although Thenardier’s scavenging from the corpses at Waterloo still gets a mention.
Marius lived with his grandfather, Monsieur Gillenormand, who has a small role in the French Concept version but was later removed. Monsieur Gillenormand, in the novel, was Marius’ grandfather and surrogate father.

The Friends of the ABC were an intellectual society, as in the musical. However, some of the boys had love, admiration, and attraction for each other as well as Socratic feelings for their leader Enjolras, most notably Grantaire. Grantaire only attended their meetings because of Enjolras, and ends up executed alongside his hero when the barricade falls. Bahorel, also a member of the ABC society in the novel, is cut from the musical.
